for everyone confused, spotting is a technique used in dance when dancers turn. The dancer picks a specific spot to focus on as they turn their head quickly. This helps them maintain their balance and prevents dizziness. Figure skaters don’t spot because we spin too fast! It also wouldn’t help our spins in any way, so we just don’t do it. + there are some spin positions that are impossible to spot in!

@ClairePlaysTodayYT I have done dance and figure skated both are very difficult but in my opinion figure skating is much harder and more dangerous. First off your doing everything spinning, jumping, and moving around on ice. It makes things so slippery plus the fall can hurt way more. I’ve broken two bones and sprained my wrist 3 times from skating. Plus your doing all the same lifts and spins sooooo much faster and way higher in the air if you have a partner compared to dancing.

as a dancer, i figured one reason you can’t spot is because of your spinning speed, so that’s why my question has always been: if you can’t spot, how do you keep track of yourself? how many spins you’ve done/where you are/where you need to stop etc
@diorteez8405
@diorteez8405 Жыл бұрын
i haven't skated in years 😅 but from what i can remember; usually (not always) the wall where the judges are at is a different color, so we can kiiind of keep track of ourselves, though we don't really need to know how many spins we've exactly done, when we change positions that depends on the music and choreo (bc it's so fast it's kind of impossible to switch while exactly facing the judges), bc of symmetrical force you won't really change your spot (except if your doing a traveling entrance but that one's slower), and where u need to stop, we just stop anywhere sooo to summarize the answer: we just do what feels right haha

@S_Carol
@S_Carol Жыл бұрын
It's very different. I used to do ballet and the best I could do was doubles, too. Then I took up figure skating later on. Spins and pirouettes just have completely different technique. For spins you need extra precision when pulling in, but then you can just focus on balance because there's so little loss of speed. The entrance is less critical for pirouettes, but then you have to work hard to keep the momentum going because you're constantly losing speed to the floor.

@GorgieClarissa
@GorgieClarissa Жыл бұрын
You can't spot... otherwise... you'd break your neck!! 😂😂 Oh wow! this comment blew up! But the function of spotting is to whip your head to be at the exact same spot every time you turn. A figure skater spins so fast, that in order to actually spot correct, he/she would have to whip their head so incredibly fast that the physics of the speed and the whipping would actually create a force so fast, it actually WOULD break your neck. I am not saying that anyone could actually perform such a feat in order to make that happen. I don't think it is scientifically possible to spin that fast AND spot at the same time. But this is literally what whiplash is.... so yes... IF one COULD perform this task, then there would be a possibility of breaking one's neck. It's just physics.

I used to do both figure skating & ballet…I’d spot something on myself while spinning on ice while learning to avoid dizziness. I can also say, figure skating spins made my ballet spins more graceful, balanced, and fast!
@michaelb2685
@michaelb2685 Жыл бұрын
I was an avid roller skater before I took ballet classes. My spins were good on skates and it translated to my ballet. Now my take on that is because ballet dancers turn much slower than a skater spins. Skaters have this internal awareness and dancers use spotting externally for that same sense. Also with dance, your audience is usually in one direction, and skaters have it all around them. Also, ballet was designed to never turn your back on the King, so everything had to face him (maybe it could have spilled over from this?).

@michaelb2685
@michaelb2685 Жыл бұрын
@JenniferFigueroa-fw3dg If you skated and tried spinning, you would find the revolutions are too fast to spot. You have to focus more inward or pick a somewhat stationary spot, like the ice directly below you or your legs on the inside of the spin. I have found just before I stop spinning I can even close my eyes for a brief bit. We use to spin on different things as kids and never knew about spotting. Only a few became dizzy. I danced professionally in NYC and with Alvin Ailey II. I understand both worlds. Before dance, I wanted to be a professional roller skater.
@zoerain2003
@zoerain2003 Жыл бұрын
@@JenniferFigueroa-fw3dg yes exactly! Like the point of my skate, or my hands or maybe my arm/shoulder or something on my clothing. I suppose it’s a little trick to avoid dizziness but spins consist of extreme groundedness and grace within oneself. It’s honestly a flow when you don’t do it for competition purposes.

As I recall, professionals try to look at one direction while swiftly spinning their head to look at the same direction as their bodies turn. This is avoid dizziness.

My ballet teacher once got asked ‘why do we spot in ballet, in figure skating we dont’ she was pissed and made sure she had everyone’s attention before lecturing everyone for a good 30mins that dancers turn and do not spin. That’s 30 mins of my life that I’ll never get back

DANCER HERE So for those who don’t know spotting is a technique that dancers use to keep spinning.So they don’t get dizzy and fall out off there pirouettes or turns.It helps you with the speed to if you wanna stop just spot a little slower and put your foot on the ground.I really hope this helped for those who didn’t know

I learned this from my mother and yes many skaters have s technique they used it’s not just that or else they would probably throw up and ballet dancers also use a technique where they look at something as they spin and turn their head right back to it as soon as they can

Im an intermediate skater who has been figure skating for about two and a half years. It’s crazy how much of spinning is just how you feel and not what you see. Your eyes only help to avoid other skaters that get too close. I avoid dizziness by keeping my chin up and doing some move after in the reverse direction of the spin.

In Ballet, we do spins really fast, so we have to spot to keep balance because in my class we do about 5-8 spins in one go. Putting your hair up helps a lot too. It helps not get hair in your eyes when you are doing turns.

That makes sense! When dancers turn for 15 or more reps we don’t really spot till we slow down a bit. Not only would you break your neck but the whipping would throw you off balance. I was wondering what techniques figure skaters might have to prevent dizziness or is it just practice!❤

to the people who are confused, figure skaters don’t spot like dancers because when dancers spin they don’t spin as fast as figure skaters so it’s easy for them to spot, but when figure skaters spin, they spin too fast so they can’t spot. If they spot, they might hurt their neck or even break it because your neck looses control.
@cheyennemayberry7280

for the confused people to spot is super helpful when youre doing a spin and if you wanna teach yourself how to spot then put a noticable sticker or smth on the wall and try to do a pirouette and try to focus on that object you put on the wall. spotting helps you get more pirouettes too. i can do about 13 and thats ab it
