I first studied aqeedah when I was 18-19 I studied with a South Asian Scholar who was maturidi and his sanad went back to Abul Hassan Al Ashari apparently that is the certification for majority of the ulema in the sub continent. Today we include athari and the aqida of the hanabila , he wasn’t aware of the atharis/hanabila was an approach that had any continuity.

The late Hanbalis have often been ignored because they were always so few in number. Also their style is less refined so it is easy to overlook them. Identifying them and including them as a continuum of Sunni creed is important because it allows us to juxtapose what traditional scholars say with what modern Wahhabi/Salafi scholars hold. Everyone is free to believe whatever they want to believe, but hijacking a tradition and making it one's own is not academically fair.
