which stands for "not in the groove" which is a modded version of one of the stepmania games "in the groove"

@@seth6525 The fork of StepMania mentioned, more colloquially known as "Open In The Groove", or "OpenITG", was forked from version 3.95, which is the same internal version that NotITG uses to this day. These effects and gimmicks seen on screen are part of what's known as "modfiles", which are created using a foreground change located within an XML file, which then injects Lua into a queued functions, known as a "Command", into an object loaded via the XML, or an "Actor". This Actor allows the rest of the modfile's base code, the "template", to be loaded along with it, creating a sandbox-like environment for the modfile to execute within. This modfile can do many things, including apply modifiers to the playfields, insert more Actors on screen, awake extra players to be used for said modifiers, and yes, even change the foreground.
