I had the opportunity to fire a Bren many years ago when I was on the rife team in army cadets at Riverdale Collegiate in Toronto. We were bussed to the Winona range near St. Catherines, Ontario and fired Lee Enfield .303's. (the "real McCoy," NOT the .22 caliber trainers.). Then, we fired the Bren. What a beautiful firearm. From experience reloadingf not shooting just playing around with a real one the other day the mag rocks in very very smoothly almost, too easy to reload compared to how people think a top loading lmg would be like also the bolt impulse was somewhat heavy but okay for how big the barrel is also wouldn't want to fall forwards with it very front heavy with that bipod
@danielsprouls9458
@danielsprouls9458 Жыл бұрын
Correct me if I am wrong, I thought the bren had a bolt hold open on an empty mag. If so it would of only take about half the time to reload. There is a good reason the bren stayed in service as long as it did. With it's quick change barrel and fast reload coupled with it's great accuracy, you don't want to be downrange of that beast.
@kellyshistory306
@kellyshistory306 Жыл бұрын
@@danielsprouls9458 It does have a hold open. Cycling the bolt between magazines was more insurance, since you could not be sure if the gun stopped firing because the magazine was empty or because it had jammed/malfunctioned. Jams/malfunctions were pretty rare however so you could probably forego the precautionary cycling of the bolt to speed up the reloading process, but that is why it was done. Technically with a 2 man team the gunner would remove the spent magazine and then cycle the bolt while the loader put on a new magazine, so it didn't really take up any additional time for the gunner to cycle the bolt just in case since the loader was busy putting on the new magazine anyway so the gun couldn't fire. Generally any malfunctions with the Bren could be fixed by cycling the bolt, so it was worthwhile to do so long as you had the time.

Not surprising there's little recoil, the gun weighs 28 pounds without a magazine on. Its downfall as an automatic weapon was that it was too accurate. If you compare the beaten area at 100 metres it's only about half that of the FN MAG. Because it's on a bipod and the weapon is so heavy it is all too easy to put two rounds on target with less than half a diameter overlap when firing single shots..

Whilst serving in a British Army infantry regiment the Bren gun was issued one per section of ten men. The No. 1 a Lance Corporal carried the Bren, the No.2 was the loader and carried a pack containing a spare barrel with a service kit and the No.4 rifle. Each man in the section carried four magazines of 30 rounds of 0.303 in two pouches. Quite a weight actually. So the rounds carried per ten men was 1200. An improvement in accuracy of the Bren could be achieved by anchoring the bipod with 303 round in each hole in the foot of the bipod. This controlled the Bren jumping about. This was not allowed in competitions on the range. NB The section commander, a full Corporal carried the late addition of the Sten with a removable wooden butt, the remainder the No.4 rifle. The Bren was a nice accurate weapon but care had to be taken with wind driven sand as separated cartridge cases could be an issue.

During WWII Bren gunners were taught to release the trigger after saying "fish and chips" in order to preserve ammunition. That way you would get 5 or 6 bursts per magazine, allowing the other squad members to move up who would then use their Lee Enfields and grenades, if close enough, to keep the enemies' heads down while the Bren Gunner moved up. By leap-frogging in this manner your unit could quickly move up on their objective....at least, that's how the theory went.

@@hotdog9262ou couldn't be more wrong. The MGs were wildly inaccurate because accuracy was not their purpose. The bren was for infantry support yes but the different style of infantry units between the German and English forces made two very different guns. Mgs were suppression weapons not ideal for accuracy, fast but not accurate. There is an account of a British soldier running across the sights of an MG not taking a single bullet. The Bren however was built for accuracy not suppression with accounts of kills at ranges the mg couldn't hope to copy. It took 3 man teams to run a mg set up, one man with the gun the other two carrying ammunition and spare parts usually barrels. The bren could be carried by a single soldier with the ammo and spare carried across the whole unit.

Remember once on a qualifying shoot, the previous two companies were kicked off by the Rangemaster for firing single shots and we were given all their ammo and our own and told to use it up but not fire any single shots or we'd be marching back to barracks carrying our Brens and ammo!! We shot 1,000s of rounds each over various ranges and had the best day shooting ever!!!!

The correct way to change magazines is with the right hand while the left hand steadies the weapon. Sweep the empty magazine off with the right hand as the heel of the hand hits the mag release. Discard the empty magazine to the left by sweeping under the gun. Grab a fresh magazine with the right hand from a pile to the right and mount it. As the right hand finishes mounting the fresh magazine, grab the cocking lever and pull to the rear. Replace the right hand on the grip and continue firing. Throughout, the left hand holds the butt firmly to the shoulder.
@zoiders
@zoiders Жыл бұрын
You don't need to touch the cocking handle between magazines as the Bren has a last round hold open that holds the bolt fully to the rear and then drops the bolt onto the sear ready to fire when you insert a new magazine. The drills they are using here are unsafe. 1:55

RTFM. The official way to do it is: pull back cocking handle - replace mag with right hand - carry on. You see plenty of archive footage omitting the pulling back the cocking handle before replacing the mag though.

Really makes me wonder what it'd look like if the mag was on the bottom instead of the top.

I wonder how many soldiers in trenches suffered hand wounds due to exposing their hands to enemy fire due to the top position of the magazine during reloads

Are you aware there was a 100 rd drum magazine used on the Bren? Never seems to get a mention. Why?

It's much scarier if you double tap it... Three rounds over and over again that sounds like someone actually aimed at you 10 times, between trigger pulls.

This LMG looks simple to use. Why was it replaced by SAWs, whose belt feed appears to be more complicated to operate? I have no clue. Perhaps, veterans or engineers can help me get a clue.

Someday I would like to do an experiment. Have a run of the mill US Army team of M240 gunner and assistant, and compare it against a two man team running a Bren gun who have been trained in the British army standards and regulations for a Bren gun team. And just see how rate of fire compares between a belt fed and a top feed magazine light machine gun.

Odd that this demo Bren is using a direct line of sight which is thus blocked by the magazine. How can the operator see the target - ? The Bren generally used offset sights to get round the direct line of sight issue.
