The Notorious B.I.G.

Күн бұрын

Episode 2 - SKY’S THE LIMIT _In New York City, there is no sitting on the throne without possessing a style that is as bright and flavorful as it is original. The Big Apple also loves a come up story. While the Notorious B.I.G. leveled up lyrically, his fashion climbed parallel. He ultimately became the face of Coogi sweaters and Jesus pendants. No song exemplified Big’s aspirational glow on global culture more than “Sky’s the Limit.” In episode 2, we break down the beauty of “Sky’s the Limit” with Bad Boy R&B group 112 and God’s Favorite DJ Clark Kent. But first we sit with the architects behind Big’s evolution to fashion icon. See, before Big Poppa wore Versace, he rocked pieces from Guy and Shernae Woods’s custom line 5001 Flavors. Just ask superstar stylist and former Bad Boy intern Mike B. He was there. When it comes to Biggie’s true playa aesthetic, these are his Day 1’s.

The Notorious B.I.G. channel is the official KZbin home of The Notorious B.I.G. featuring his catalog of official music videos. The Notorious B.I.G. is widely recognized as one of the world’s most influential rappers and has sold more than 17 million albums in the U.S. alone. Before his murder in 1997, Christopher Wallace recorded two classic albums as The Notorious B.I.G. His debut Ready to Die arrived in 1994 and helped revitalize the East Coast rap scene with massive hits like “Big Poppa” and “Juicy.” Life After Death was released in March 1997 just weeks after he was shot and killed in Los Angeles. The record topped the U.S. album charts and featured the hits “Hypnotize” and “Mo Money Mo Problems.” It remains one of the few hip-hop albums to ever achieve Diamond certification from the RIAA.

I'm a 39 white dude from the suburbs in Oregon and I swear to God when I was 11 years old and saw the Big Poppa video, I was hooked to that man from then on. He was an icon before rap icons. He was a bridge for different cultures - it didn't matter where you were from. You could either relate to him or you'd listen to him like you were watching a gangster flick. I haven't been affected by death as much since. Miss you, Big.

For me... sky's the limit the best Rap song in history, no other song makes me feel so many feelings, nowadays life has been screwing my health for 4 years and when the beat sounds my eyes get teary and I can't listening to it, all the good times I spent with this song come to my mind. Man, I just went back and listened to Sky's the Limit to see if I could pick out Biggie singing the hook with 112 and Clark Kent wasn't lying. You can hear Biggie's falsetto starting at 2:23 of the song. I ain't gon' lie.....brought tears to my eyes to hear Big sing. Even in 2023 this still one of my favorite songs of all time.

If no one else is going to say it I will. The Chronic is not only a classic but it’s one of the most important time capsules in history. It elevated GFunk, introduced Dre as an artistic genius without Ruthless, proved Snoop wasn’t just a fluke feature, gave us more DOC, introduced several legends, branded Death Row, chronicled the riots and response….. The strength and power of RBX on HIGH POWERED is unmatched. And that beat coming on after Lyrical Gangbang was the perfect fade transition. Dre said he was gonna give you gangsta Shit and you got it!!!! Wit tha WICKEDNESS!!!!!!!!! The only other affiliated artist that could have rhymed on that was DOC and Cube. Opinions are what they are. But as much respect as I have for dude, I will not let Clark lessen the sonic measuring tape of the 90s. Fuck that. A classic.
@design1of470

My friend used to model for The Source magazine so they’d send him two round trip Greyhound tickets from Cleveland to NYC once a month for a year. I’d go with him and we’d have the time of our lives from East New York to Harlem, we even took the long ride to Coney Island once. But this one time we went every single place we went in the city, whether a bodega, project, car, cab, shop, pizzeria, boom box, apartment, brownstone etc was either playing one of two songs. We LITERALLY went nowhere or spent any time not hearing these two songs unless we were asleep. And those two songs were: “Unbelievable” by BIG and “Take It Easy” by Mad Lion. It was like a law had been passed that you couldn’t play anything else. The city was on fire 🔥 the days were long and the nights were hot. That city loved that man BIG, it was deep to see just how much during that trip. 42nd street was still wild then, Canal St was bustling and Delancey St had the leathers. Downtown Brooklyn, we bought gold fronts from Albee Square Mall, Atlantic Avenue, Nostrand, Fulton and Flatbush. Jamaica Station Queens. We were there.

People are entitled to feel how they want but if you gotta constantly try to prove something, it speaks on one's character. I don't comment on Pac videos trying to convince people that BIG is better than him. Why I don't is because it's no need to prove something I already know in my head. Every Pac video comment is talking about Biggie. And none of that on Biggie videos but you see 2 pacs fans in videos of music they supposedly don’t like. “You cursed it but rehearsed it” 😂

Snoop Dogg’s first album is a classic but not better than “The Chronic”. RBX was amazing on that album, “High Powered” was crazy and every verse he had was out of here.

Yo Angie Martinez! You need to make this Big series last a few seasons cuz Big had a ton of classic tracks in those 2 albums. Would love to hear the back story to tracks like Going back to Cali, Notorious Thugs, My Downfall, Suicidal Thoughts, The What with MethodMan, Warnings..etc etc etc. Fuck it do an episode for every track 🤙
