Early Jamestown was like a death camp. First few decades were just boat after boat full people sent over with only a few surviving from each new group and slowly building up the colony. Had a wild time reading about it in a class I had to take for my history minor in college.

Neither Meriwether Lewis nor William Clark could speak directly to the Native Americans. They managed to communicate with them using hand signals, facial expressions, and through the use of interpreters. Sacagawea, a Shoshone Indian, and her husband, Toussaint Charbonneau, were interpreters. When the expedition wanted to communicate with the Shoshone Indians, they had to use a ''chain'' of communication that went like this: Lewis spoke in English to Private Francois Labiche. Labiche would translate the English into French and relay the message to Toussaint Charbonneau. Charbonneau would translate the message into Hidatsa, a Native American language, and relay it to Sacagawea.
