The R word was extremely rare among fellow soldiers and combatants. Northern and Southern armies were extremely disciplined and shunned and punished sexual assault. I have written a thesis on Sherman’s March. Most stereotype that moment with assaults on civilians but no civilians were ever touched. Farms homes and other businesses were torched but a strict moral code was upheld. There are a ton of primary sources on Sherman’s march and his memoirs report strict rules held on his men to harm no civilians.

The south was trying to draw the main northern army on the east coast - the army of the Potomac - into a destructive fight and render it ineffective as a fighting force, politically fucking the northern war effort and making everybody in DC lose their minds because they’d potentially be defenseless (though that wouldn’t be the case). Instead Lee allowed himself to get sucked into a knock down, drag out fight that had the opposite effect of wasting manpower he couldn’t afford and psyching up the union soldiers. Add the fact that Vicksburg fell the day after Gettysburg ended, cutting the South in half, and the fact that the navy strangled the already defunct southern economy (they refused to sell cotton early on, to try to get Europe involved) with its blockade, and you can see how the south fucked itself from the first bell. Props to Shane for being the man.

South hit Gettysburg to attempt to draw Grants army north away from the siege of Vicksburg.... Which eventually gave the north control of the Mississippi and strangled the South's supply lines. Gettysburg was actually a hail Mary from Lee, North was in control at that point 🤷😂

The two sides had been fighting for about two years along the rappohanock river from richmond, to fredricksburg and the wilderness. The Virginia countryside could not support the confederate war effort anymore so Lee decided to slip around meade’s flank and see if he could either capture dc or harrisburg and make the north sue for peace or at least no longer support Lincoln’s war, Vicksburg was down to eating rats and was only days away from surrender. If anything Lee wanted to roll the dice before grant’s army could join in the battle against lee in Virginia. It was a calculated risk that Lee thought he could pull off since he had been successful up until that point he was fortunate to have stonewall Jackson as his deputy up until the wilderness. Also Lee had invaded the north earlier resulting in the battle of antietem which was considered a draw.
