I agree. I'm Italian and even though the music's author is Italian and Italian itself is a latin-derivative language as french and both have really similar fonetics, the Italian translation isn't as faithful as this English version or the Spanish one. It was sufficient enough, in my opinion, but not so accurate in the rhymes and in the phrases.

we are all so accustomed to the French or the Italian version that we are missing out on this one. I kinda like it and there is actual depth in the lyrics. It isn't transliteration. Some French words are so intricate and poetic that it is difficult to translate it word to word in English. They did a great job, especially Quassimodo's part, in turning these french poetic words into an english poem. We kinda should recognise the work, it wasn't easy but at least it rhymes and makes sense.

After listening to the French version so many times it's odd hearing it english, especially when I'm a native English speaker to begin with! I'm also surprised at how similar the lyrics are to the original as well. Translating songs into other languages requires drastically changing the words to keep the rhyming scheme most of the time (as with Les Mis, where the french and English versions are very different while telling the same story), but it worked out perfectly here.

I'm currently studying literature and linguistics and you're so right; it's REALLY hard to translate music and poetry to other languages. You have to keep in mind the words, their meaning, the rhythm, the construction of the verses itself (sometimes this is what defines therhythm) and it's something really complex to do. Yes, I've heard the other versions and the italian one is my favorite (I'm brazilian) and it was one of the songs that I listened to the most when studying italian, BUT I see lots of people here complaining about the lyrics and all of that; I think they did the best they could with it. Some expressions have different meanings in other languages and some of them don't even exist in others, so you have to work with what would be understandable by the country's audience. It's a pretty tricky job and some translations are better than others (comparing translations is really fun but oh boy, there are some who miss the target completely), but I agree with you, it worked!

I don't think people appreciate exactly how difficult it is to translate between two different languages - literal translations from French to English (or from any Latin language to Germanic languages in general) can sound TOO literal, super awkward, and even accidently funny, and you lose the essence of what is genuinely being said in the original language, so it becomes a matter of accurately translating the essence of the work, versus a literal translation of the language itself. To anybody who says this version is disgusting or a parody of the original, I don't feel that's fair. Although the original French version is arguably the best, this version does a solid job of honoring what the original song is about - three different men coveting Esmeralda in three very different ways: Guiless love, barely restrained obsession and pure, unbridled lust, which eventually (and tragically) lead to her demise. It's an effective, and lovely rendition, and given the difficulty of translating between languages, very well done.

... WTF is this ? How did they DARE ... HOW ? I mean, the french version contains a lot of hidden meanings, it's ... a song that uses the french language perfectly to make it really hard to undertand the full meaning of the song, even for the french native speakers. Here it's : Take all hidden meanings ... translate them ... and forget to hid them. Examples: 1. "She dances naked in my soul and sleep won't come" , in the french song: "J'ai posé mes yeux sous sa robe de gitane" which means "I laid my eyes under her gypsy dress" 2. "I'd hang him high and laugh to see him die alone", in the french song: "Celui là ne mérite pas d'être sur terre" which means "This one doesn't deserve to live on earth" 3. "Oh Lucifer, let me go beyond god's law", "Oh Lucifer, oh laisse moi rien qu'une fois", "Oh Lucifer, oh let me just once" 4. "For want of her I know I'd gove my soul to sell", "La désirer fait-il de moi un criminel ?", "Desire her would make of me a criminal ?" 5. "My promised one please let me one time be untrue Before in front of god and man I marry you.", "Ma dulcinée laissez-moi vous être infidèle, Avant de vous avoir menée jusqu'à l'autel." "My love, let me be untrue Before I had led you to the altar" Hard to get a translation that get the deepness of the word "Dulcinée", so, imagine "My love" * 10 and you get what he said. I think these translation issues came from the building of the french song where one verse continue the one before where in the english one, each verse is a different sentence. And well, there's also the fact that in french, there's no "you" for the 2nd person of singular and plural but "tu" for the singular and "vous" for the plural, and, important fact, for the polite form. In the french song, phoebus uses the "Vous" of politeness, which means that he respect her deeply.

Well mate, I don't know how you managed to gather enough courage to transcript all that from your mind all the way down here... But congrats ! I totally agree with you. What you need to keep in mind though is that translating poetry (and we're not talking just any poetry, this is top of the notch) is far from easy... Enough so that in some cases you end up having to change the lyrics completely, thus inevitably impacting the meaning of the "hidden message". Thus, I would not say the english version is superficial. It is deep too, in a different way (which might not be the exact same way the author meant, but still). That being said, the French version clearly is far superior in my opinion (and there again I totally agree with you). And last but not least (+Valeria Capellaro), the reason why italian and french versions are miles ahead of any other is - apart from the outrageously superior quality of their casts (shout out to Matteucci and Lavoie) - that the composer and writer of this masterpiece is no other than Riccardo Cocciante. Indeed, the latter is both italian and french (he is known in France as "Richard Cocciante"). He wrote the entire piece to suit both languages. No wonder why these two versions are the absolute favourites of almost anyone who knows the piece at least a bit. I personally can't choose between either, even though I have to say Matteucci's performance is one of the most absurdly beautiful things I've ever heard... Edit : I do like this version very much too. I am utterly impressed by the quality of the translation. I do like the way it tells the same things with totally different words. I like the musicality of it as well. So yes I do very much insist on the point that I previously made : this version is not superficial at all. It is beautiful too.
@som.23546 жыл бұрын
It's a bit harsh I think, but I understand your frustration... I am French and studied English translation: you always have to sacrifice some things in order to keep the meaning as close as possible, with new lyrics that can be sung with the same melody AND putting the touch of poetry that sounds the best in the language the song is being translated into... And what sounds good to the ears is VERY different from one country to the other :-) yes a lot of things go down the drain, but among the many, many, many terrible translations (F.R.I.E.N.D.S translated in French? Omg... it's the worst I have ever heard so far, by FAR!), this one is actually pretty good! Did you know how the title from the movie "The Horse Whisperer" was translated into French? "L'homme qui murmure à l'oreille des chevaux". 1 mile long, but they had to: the horse whisperer is literally a job, which would be translated as "Le psychologue du cheval" in French....... meaning "The Horse's Shrink". I wouldn't go watch that movie, ew. So in order to fit it the best in French, they kept the word "whisper" and added a bunch of poetry that French people like to go with their looong sentences. They translated like this "The man who whispers into the horses' hears". It's much better! And very very French, lol. Translation is a very hard, hard (and underpaid) job... whenever I read of hear a fairly good translation, I take the time to give a thumbs up :-)

I see a lot of hate through different versions I keep listening despite my ignorance in languages, but let me tell you that all actors sing with passion, Phoebe is the one with the supposed passion towards Esmeralda and the voice, and in the Italian, French, English, Russian, Polish (so far I've seen) version, they follow through. They all give it their best. The actors have passion for their own characters as they sing through their sufferings/passion/hurt/anger. Language is truly a fascinating thing because sometimes it's not needed to really show what the characters are implying. There's no need to hate, there's no need to discredit them from performing a well-known piece. I just read a comment saying the English version is their version they can sing along but the french sounds better. Why? How does it make it so much better? I understand if it's because of their dialect, but if you listened the french version it's because you read the translation then listened to them, as well as being the original, that's totally fine. I like to listen to their voice and really feel what the characters are going through. Someone else pointed this "Best Quasimodo: Russian, Best Frollo: French, Best Phoebe: English" and I agree, but those aren't my exact favorites. So far I like them all, they give it their best, the actors add in a little bit of themselves to not directly connect with the original and still perform at their highest to entertain people who unfortunately couldn't due to a language barrier. If you don't know a language like moi here, it's okay, but is the hate and dislike necessary? I hope not. When I listen to the Italian version, I fully connect with it, and I don't know Italian. Maybe it's because of the Spanish that I understand partially? No, it's because of how Frollo is delivered, like the actor knew exactly what Frollo was going through, compensating his lustful needs to blaming it on the devil's work, not letting himself accept that sexuality is normal- that is what I liked, only did I learn the small pieces in italian after I discovered this and its makes it so much better. The French Frollo delivers it with the passion of hate towards Esmeralda for having him experience such vulnerabilities, the voice resonates with that kind and I can see why many like it, but all actors (ALL ACTORS) have their own ways of delivering it. Interpretation is important, and let me tell you that I wasn't this passionate about commenting it if it weren't for the hate. I wouldn't have realized this, not having the confidence of delivering this comment.

And when I see her move I see hell to pay. She dances naked in my soul and sleep won't come. And it's no use to pray these prayers to Notre dame. He put this heat inside me I'm ashamed to tell. Without my god inside I'm just a burning shell. The sin of eve she has in her I know so well. For want of her I know I'd give my soul to sell. Belle, this gypsy girl is there a soul beneath her skin. And does she bear the cross of all our human sin. Oh Notre dame please let me go beyond gods law. Open the door of love inside, Esmeralda. [Phoebus:] Belle, even though her eyes seem to lead us to hell. She may be more pure, more pure than words can tell. But when she dances feelings come no man can quell. Beneath her rainbow coloured dress there burns the well. My promised one, please let me one time be untrue. Before in front of god and man I marry you. Who would be the man who'd turn from her to save his soul. To be with her I'd let the devil take me whole. Oh Fleur-de-lys I am a man who knows no law. I go to open up the rose, Esmeralda [Quasimodo, Frollo & Phoebus:] She dances naked in my soul and sleep won't come. And it's no use to pray these prayers to Notre dame. Tell, who'd be the first to raise his hand and throw a stone. I'd hang him high and laugh to see him die alone. Oh Lucifer please let me go beyond god's law. And run my fingers through her hair, Esmeralda. Esmeralda.

Because of the darkness others can’t see her pure hearth. She has a noble heart and blood. But promised one doesn’t have. Esmeralda is a free bird. The moon sees and knows that but resisting. She is the sunset. Still more beautiful than any other planet. Turkey is like sunset or autumn sun now. Turkey is like a noble old man in darkness but it’s an Phoenix.

When she dances all the stories she can tell. Scheherazade, noble blood, free lineage.

French and Italian versions are much better, also because Riccardo Cocciante is half French and half Italian, so he was able to put perfectly into Italian all the hidden meanings of the French version.

True . Plus it certainly help that French and Italian are very close languages .

The costumes are so exaggerated... The Italian version relies a lot more on interpretation...
