I fell in love with the musical adaptation because of this reason. It doesn’t condone Frollo’s actions nor does it make light of them, but it does show us his struggle with his lust for Esmeralda, and in a much more tragic and humanizing way than Disney does. Love it!

когда читала книгу, самым отрицательным мне там казался все же Феб. Фролло постепенно скатывается в безумие и шизу и это видно. Он - заложник своих убеждений. А Фебу ничего не мешало поступить благородно. Но нет.

I feel like the whole point of this story is the cruelty of natural instincts aka lookism. The only man that truly loved Esmeralda was Quasimodo and she couldn't reciprocate his feelings because he was physically monstrous; it's a cosmic irony of epic proportions, which is solved at the end when he dies beside her and they become one (and equals) in death . Frollo didn't want to fall in love with Esmeralda but he fell for her because she was beautiful; he himself says that he is doomed; he doesn't want to love her. And Esmeralda can't reciprocate Frollo either because she says he finds him ugly and old. Phoebus was trash but women loved him because he was handsome. How unfair.

But was Frollo really in love with her ? That's not really what I would say, in my opinion ^^ He lusted after her but never was interested romantically in who she was, what she liked, which qualities she had, he was unhealthily obsessed with her every moves. He wanted her to him alone - despite him. I wouldn't call it love, but as you say it's how la Esméralda looked like that is the origin.

I'd excuse Esmeralda because she was young (a teenager) and in love with Phoebus. Perhaps in time she would be able to appreciate Quasimodo. Also Quasimodo didn't love her because she was beautiful - he only fell for her because she was kind to him and gave him water when he was at the pillory. Frollo desired Esmeralda to the point of obsession. It clearly drives him crazy in the novel. You're spot on for Phoebus.

Because he is not a villain. That's one of the things I love of Victor Hugo. He never wrote about heros and villains, good and bad. He wrote about persons. Frollo is a very complex character of the book, he is going trough a struggle, and he cannot handle it. That's why he took bad decisions, but he never really had a bad intention. The guy was going crazy. Is one of my favorite characters, because of the complexity, and though I don't love musicals, I really love the way this actor plays Frollo. Read the book you won't regret it. The story that Victor Hugo wrote, is nothing at all like Disney's movie. P.D. sorry for my english

Murat Akçakaya Agreed. He still went after Esmeralda and tortured her literally to death. That is still cruel and villainous, no matter his intentions. And besides that, his intentions were not that great either. Did he care about Esmeralda? No. What she wanted meant nothing; he simply wanted what he wanted and did horrible things to get it.

Murat Akçakaya a villain needs a hero in order to exist. There is no "hero" in "Notre Dame" (be blessed the author). There is a character though, a person, and that's Frollo. Hugo tells two stories that parallel each other: that of Frollo and of Paquette la Chantefleurie, Esmeralda's mother, - they are the main characters (or rather, one Hugo's character expressed in separate persons). There are also a number of minor characters (e.g.: Esmeralda and Quasimodo) that act as symbols in order to better express Hugo's ideas (mainly those regarding person and art).
