The Irish Guard was formed in 1949 as a part of the University of Notre Dame Marching Band. The uniform of the guard is based on the pattern of the traditional Scottish kilt and incorporated the unique Notre Dame tartan. Simple.

Irish Guards only the pipers wear kilts snd they wear caubeens as headdress , normal band members and guards wear bearskins red tunics and tweeds , this is closer to Scottish Highkander / regiments of foot dress albeit the pipers also don’t wear busbys / bearskin like not to mention the tartan is neither an irish or scottish tartan
