In sixty years, more than three hundred and fifty infectious diseases have appeared: SARS, H1N1, H5N1… An emergence of new viruses that seems to be accelerating. Experts are unanimous in asking themselves: when will a new epidemic strike? Plague, Spanish flu, smallpox, AIDS...: history is punctuated by infectious episodes that have decimated populations. But where is research today? Are we better prepared? The film follows the trail of three particularly threatening viruses: H7N9 influenza in Asia, Mers-CoV, a cousin of SARS, active in the Middle East, which kills one in two patients, and Ebola, which has caused more than seven hundred deaths in West Africa since the beginning of the year.
Carrier animals
From the World Health Organization's crisis unit in Switzerland, responsible for issuing alerts, to the confines of the Gabonese forest on the trail of Ebola, the investigation takes us to the four corners of the world. Thanks to the field work of scientists who risk their lives, we now know that wild animals are potential reservoirs of viruses that are dangerous to humans. For example, Ebola fever was transmitted by fruit bats, and Asian flu H5N1 was carried by migratory birds. Faced with the threat, the scientific world is mobilizing.
