I can see many common type music teachers shaking their heads at this. And that's why I love it! Focus on the creativity. I've made scales before. It's putting harmony to the scales that's difficult.

Part 2 of this video will talk about figuring out the chords. Though, you don't always need harmony. Look into various non-westernized folk music for inspiration.

Use double stops that fit whatever scale you use first and after you have coherent riff you can expand the double stops into chords. I don't know if I make sense but it's logical.

Your scale sounds dark but funny at the same time, I like it. I have a couple ideas that I’m developing on.

Good video, I made up a bunch of 8 note scales about 15 years ago, now I've got a decent understanding of how to make them into something musical.

Cool! Musical is the keyword. Creating scales can be pretty inspiring to write new music.

Hahaa! It does! It's nice when scales look like what they represent.

I made a scale one time and then I found out that it already exists (which was both disappointing and awesome at the same time). it's "double harmonic major" - C Db E F G Ab B C. I found out that it's also the beginning notes to Misirlou. And the cadenza on Sing a Song of Song by Kenny Garrett.

I guess you still made the scale. On your own at least. And it doesn't matter if it existed before, but what you do with it. That's what I get out of this at least!

Awesome scale! In no time a computer program could come up with every possible combination of notes. Even some people have attempted it. Check out Masaya Yamaguchi and some of his books like “The Complete Thesaurus of Musical Scales.” For me the ultimate goal is the creative activity involved and the final musical result.

I also made a song on this scale and today I discovered its existence.

This happened to me too with G Hungarian Major: G; A#; B; C#; D; E; F; G.. but, for some reason, this scale reminds me the Byzantine scale (or Double Harmonic Major) so I suspected that could be an existent scale. And yeah, as this scale are Hungarian Major, the fourth mode of Byzantine scale is Hungarian Minor (or Double Harmonic Minor)

good vid, thanks sir. got some question. if i made one scale and the root was F, then i fill it to whole fret board by seven chosen notes. should it named by the R-3-5 by F itself? and if we built our own scale, does it mean we made modes which is 1-2-3-4-5-6-7 of em?
@NotRightMusic6 жыл бұрын
Thanks latif has! I'm not sure I completely understand your first question. Let me know if my answer helps. Are you asking if the notes of your created scale should be numbered? If you have a reason for numbering them it would be a good idea to do so. For example, if you want to build chords from your scale, numbering it would definitely help. But, ultimately, the numbers are not the music itself, so it's not required. Your choice! As for the second question - Yes, if you made a scale you can start from different degrees of the scale as roots and use them as modes. It's up to you to figure out the characteristic notes, intervals, and chords. Does that help?

Yeah, but the "good sounding" scales are already invented, many of those new scales will be confused with already existing scales. I will try it though
@iantino2 жыл бұрын
Not really, the only point is that some scales may have little use for functional harmony, but they can be used to improvise over some chords, for example.

They sound good because they are commonly used and heard. If the dominant culture in your society wanted to, they could create a new scale and have it be used everywhere.
