Notsodog, bro thank you so much. I’ve pieced together cannabis history through books and the more modern scene through forums since the 90s. I’ve seen all your online content and it has helped fill so many gaps for me. Things like the history of chem and og, or stuff about Neville shoemaker are what I live for and I really do appreciate that you have put all this out there for folks like me. It is a big part of my life. And so are you, even though we’ve never spoken. The internets weird huh? ❤

Speaking of early purples that Crybaby mentioned. In 84-85, we were getting stuff in So Cal through a guy going to college in Humboldt and bringing back packs. Another guy I knew worked atvLong Beach Honda, and a guy came through there seasonally with a motor home loaded up with this same bud. It was just called "The Humboldt" by us locally. It was 101% skunk by scent profile, true "Roadkill." To the point that when you would drive by a skunk on the road forever more, you'd inhale deeply because it reminded you of that weed. It's hard to explain how intense the odor was. You could leave it in a car, leave the windows down all night, and the next morning, the car till reeked as if you had hit a live skunk with it. You just couldn't hide it. You could have a bag of it in a room, be smoking some other green bud, and people walking in asked for a hit of the other bud they smelled in your pocket or a drawer. Anyhow, it came in both a beautiful lime green, and also a purple, almost black type. The smell on both was identical. There's no way the green went longer and turned purple. They were two distinct phenotypes. Both were so frosty, yet also of a greasy resin type. They had a very leafy morphology, no hairs. The buds were full, yet not hard. More like dense, yet spongy. When Crybaby mentioned early Purple Skunk in High Times, it took me back. Yes, it was real, and to this day, still the best I've ever had. I believe Chems and OGs are something that came down from plants like those. When I smoke Chems, OGs, and even more so blends like Motorbreath, there's a real familiarity. Yet, something is lacking, and something else is added. The old Skunks were very one dimensional, whereas Chems and OGs have other subtleties and are more complex. Yet, they're still not as strong. No doubt, for the era, the stuff was a total bust. I get why both growers and consumers needed it turned TF down. Yet, I don't believe it just went from skunk to fruit overnight. If you look at the timeline, when we stopped seeing true skunk in 85, the next 5-6 years was the evolution period from whence things like Triangle, Dogbud, and subsequently Chems, Sours, and OGs sprang. The purples that were selected after that also changed into the berry, or the earthy, Kush types we still see today, which also existed in the progenitors of Mendo P as far back as 77. Yet, Notso mentions 5% skunky types coming out of Mendo P F1s. How fun and interesting it would have been to breed them true with the slain male and have been able to see the unadulterated population of that genotype.

Please talk about breeding for early flowering (not short flowering). I'm at 50° North and if you want to grow something that is flowering 10-11 weeks, flower needs tho kick in in early July between 16h to 15h daylength (or 8-9 hours of night). What are your ideas to growing longer flowering plants up north (no Autos, no light dep).
@devinej8411Ай бұрын
Honestly take your favorite photo varieties and find an auto reg that's something good like roc bud or night owl seeds use a male from the auto pollinate ur photos now you have fast flower f1 they won't fully auto they still need a dark period should shave multiple wks off.
@johnnyace4157Ай бұрын
@@devinej8411 As I said I'm not searching for short flowering I'm searching for "long" and early flowering. Harvest should be mid September to early October a 10-11 week plant would need to start flowering around 15h:30min day length in early July (at 50° North).

If you're looking for early triggering plants I would say check out GTR seeds, they have developed an Auto Varin Line that allows most plants to finish in mid to late September regardless of latitude. They do extensive field testing as well as gene marker assisted selection.

@@johnnyace4157and again as I stated it will do a bit of both I live in CT and have successfully done this unfortunately it will always change the days of flower if it's being initiated earlier also u maybe better off running plants that pack on the weight in a few wks I forget the exact varieties that Kevin was talking about but ya all the long flowering varieties you would have to grow indoors for a length of time then put them out and probably need to run 20hr or longer light cycle so when they go out they have a potential to flower earlier and u would want to try that with equatorial varieties. Also in our area ruffly speaking a 20wk sativa is not going to happen without pulling tarps and again vegging indoors etc but if crossed to an auto u could easily find plants that have the characteristics of it long flowering sativa but be ready before the rains and crazy temp swings from ok to frost

Awesome show, thanks. When you guys mentioned strain histories, I started wondering again about apartheid in the 80s(?) and if it affected strains from South Africa like KwaZulu. It was pretty remarkable the one time I grew it- making me wonder if its history might be buried or something weird. Maybe it is in things that would fit as a puzzle piece. Maybe not though because the seeds are W.O.S., and I can't verify the authenticity.

Exactly, the only way to evaluate a smoke is to live with it for a week or two. Morning, noon, night, flower, extract. I save every plant I grow and I grow them 3x minimum. I've been meaning to not run the seedling, it's really hard to get them into the rotation properly. One of the reasons I do not like autos. In the bigger picture they only take from the scene without giving back. New growers aren't doing the cloning, aren't keeping anything, they don't see themselves as part of a tradition, part of a community, potentially the one who could find the next big thing and those who do tend to cull things that don't fit a certain image. I had an ETHOS cross from one of his multipacks and I haven't seen any new work along that line and it was a leafy mess. Part of me wanted to cull it, but I thought that is a really shitty reason not to keep it and is exactly what a commercial grower would do and it would eliminate an entire type of weed potentially an entire type of high. We missed a huge opportunity to pawn trimming off to the consumer and it is true that it weighs nothing and does protect the flower and how nice would that have been to do all your trimming before the plants even came down? I get a stiff neck and a sore back before I even start in on weeks of trimming. I even remember a forum post from a dude with a 17kw flip flop setup who never stopped trimming him and a buddy trimmed every day crop after crop after crop. One came down, one went in, one went out the door. Pure Hell.

Thanks for the vote of confidence Notso- I breed but I’m also a butcher and my wife owns a coffee shop. Just for fun we bake our home made edibles and chill in the coffee shop just to experience that kind of thing but in a small town in BFE MN. I created 25 new crosses in my first year of growing this past year. And currently I’m hunting a Super Lemon Haze F5 pack from Ethos to find my true breeder stud. My next project includes that, two sisters of Jack Herer, and every MAC including MAC1 I could acquire as I already have some MAC1 hybrids I created that I want to continue to work. I grew my chosen pheno of MAC1xArise outdoors this year and harvested already so to double check the PM resistance I want to run her progeny next to her and more zucchini's next year to see if the trait was passed on as zucchini always gets PM on its leaves. In fact I planted her in a field of squash and zucchini to test for PM resistance as they all had it and she stayed green til chop. Anyways- if I find some that have the high but not the looks and vice versa I just create a new cross. Honestly I think you can start with 5-10 beans to hunt just to see what traits are being passed on, then try to narrow down what expression you think you have. I mean I can tell almost immediately if a plant has my attention. Instead of getting obsessed with that plant I make my notes and ignore it actually. I don’t want to get tunnel vision as the only thing that matters is effects. Everything else I can try to incorporate it into the next generation of breeding programs. Anyways, hearing someone with your expertise speak about the next round of elites coming from someone who doesn’t earn a living from cannabis makes things even more exciting. As if I am being called out to deliver even though I’m a nobody 😝. Challenge accepted. 🖖🏽✌🏽✊🏽🤘🏽

Enjoyed the show. Also, Notso.... Do you think there is a different cannabinoid and terpene profile in the final product between plants allowed to mature naturally compared to those flipped to flower in 4 or 6 weeks? Also wondered what you thought about this, Do you think there is a higher rate of a plant herming being forced to flower early? 4 or 6 weeks and flip. (Nothing for nothing, seems what's wrong with a lot of kids these days... being forced to grow up too soon before they know who they are. Hmmm...... maybe all the transgender are just hermed ppl. Anyways. Kidding sort of) Thinking in the matter of percentages of probability. Greater rate or no effect? ✌️

Notso why wouldn't these guys take the best performing production plant and then find the one with best effects and tastes the best and cross those together find a few that give u the best and back cross to one of the original parents whether that's the large producer or the tasty better effect version. I've been saying for yrs never throw out a plant bc it could be the next og bc if people remember it sucked to grow rooted like shit picky and yielded about half also the timeless elites like sour chem skunk all herm and most newer breeders say kill all this if ur breeding to sell the seeds and I'm not advocating shit breeding practices but it seems that the plants with these negative traits tend to end up being a better smoke and I think if these breeders keep telling people to kill these types of phenos. Also as far as haze is concerned when og kush was 40 to 60 and 3.5g original haze was 60 to 75 a 3.5 and I would pay more for truly nice sativa's.

The. more you handle bud - the less trichomes remain on it , you are literally decontenting the thc. from the bud by tumbling weed , good for the processor , not. so good for consumer. . Jade Nectar channel is advocating for direct grower sales.

If your not willing to keep at least 1 male , breeding might not b for u . Otherwise your very bottlencked. Im not against reversing but its a tool within the box. But either way what works for said person is valid
@rustynails5462Ай бұрын
For me growing flower pollen was evil until my first breeding. I say breeding because I selected strains I wanted to keep as moms before ever thinking about pollen. I don't want to mess with reversals, and both fav's were fems. Along comes Dirty Taxi from JJ (regs) and everything changes. Now I have moms of a reg strain. I popped the rest of the pack to increase it, had 4/4 m/f plus the 3 moms I already kept. I added in the Chem91 (one favorite) but I don't expect much there. It's ChemD and GMO back on the Chem91 and a little incestuous. Also you can't improve the Chemdog. It can make other stuff better but not the other way around. But my other mom is called Flashback 86 (from Greenway Solutions). It's a fem and every bean is fire. I want more but he lost the mom. My goal is to get that strain in reg form. Hitting it to the Dirty Taxi might create some amazing stuff, but I want to find traits that associate with the FB68 leaners that might translate to a male - that passes those traits back to the FB68 mom. Basedd on the podcasts I listen to I thin it's breedding just because I have a goal. Even if it's a small one. But there's chucking too since I put lots of other plants in the orgy.
@AlbertCaine74Ай бұрын
Fun fact: Trimming only became a thing because of a generation of growers who lost the knowledge; everyone's imbalanced trace minerals. Post a photo of a 1 ft tall plant with green cotyledons and people will think it's photoshopped. Nevermind a 8 ft sativa with ripe buds and green cotyls. That's how far off the grow scene is today. Everyone's sugar leaves will give you paper cuts. They have to trim their leaf because it's Mn toxic aka calmag K Zn Fe B deficient . Dieback vs dryback.
