@@NotSoWimpyTeacher Hi Jamie, I need a bit of guidance from you. I'm on week 2 of Personal Narrative and we are loving it! Not only are my kids more eager to write but their thought process is also evolving and they are thinking about things on a more deeper level. My question is, how long should their draft, and eventually their masterpiece, be? Here in South Africa teachers always give kids a certain length (eg: 1 page) as a cut off point for a piece of writing. What do you suggest on this? I forgot to mention that my girls are in grade 3.

@@elisabethdavid3926 Hi, there! I would suggest that you not focus on length. Instead focus on content. Your girls will become discouraged if they are given length requirements. One may write 2 sentences in a draft and the other will want to write pages upon pages. As they continue to learn new revision skills, they will add to their draft and continue to grow. We encourage you to only give them those two days to draft, and then they can continue to add to it as they work on it for the next few weeks. Students will continue to grow as writers as you continue to move through the mini lessons. Every writer will produce different lengths based on their ability. Hope this helps! :)

I am jumping into a second class whose teacher has left and isn't returning. The second quarter started a week or two ago, but I want to use writer's workshop anyway... do you have any recommendations? Can I merge the beginning of the year/teaching procedures with the informational writing?

I would recommend you take the time to do the beginning of the year lessons so your students know the expectations of writing workshop. Once you get through the lessons, work through a writing genre. We recommend doing both Masterpieces, but some teachers only work through the first one if they are tight on time.

Do they go to the same writing spot every time you write? Or do they choose their spot each day?

They can choose their spots as long as they are going there quickly and quietly.
