I studied w. Guinean dance for five years w this group. Laye was not the easiest instructor to learn from if you wanted super detailed explanation of isometrics or historical context. However, his passion and relentless precision on the djembe was in itself a force of motion that propelled many of his students to an almost transcendental frenzy. Those of us who let the music and the dance speak for themselves found surrender in motion and a kinesthetic frenzy almost like religious ecstasy animating our bodies past anything we'd been asked of or knew was possible in terms of human endurance. And that surrender to the dance in itself, free from definition and invasive taxonomic analysis, is the most fundamental and essential aspect of the kinesthetic arts I have yet come up against. It changed my entire life.
