Brother Ashish Ref: Post-modifiers You have given an example to explain the participle phrases and that reads as below: Look at the children covered in the mud. As far as I know, the verb (cover) takes the preposition (with) and not (in). Could you please clarify? Regards Hyderabad
@Angrezikiclass
@Angrezikiclass 2 жыл бұрын
That's a good question, Jaleel. We generally use 'with' with this verb. But the preposition in can also be used in a sense that something is in touch with something else, like a coating.

@Angrezikiclass

It's present participle. That was a mistake. A gerund doesn't work as an adjective, a present participle can.

Your example: The person in the black shirt is a teacher. You said, "It is a prepositional phrase.". It is okay. Can't it be an adjective phrase? The reason: it describes the person with some words. Similarly, it can be turned into an adjective phrase. E.g. The person who us in the black shirt is a teacher. In short, there is always an ambiguity/intricacy between a noun phrase and adjective phrase/clause.
@Angrezikiclass

'Adjective' is a functional name; it's not an identificational name. Many things can function as an adjective; a prepositional phrase is one of them. Prepositional phrases, infinitive phrases and participle phrases are phrases that are named on the basis of identification: what they start with. They are not functional name. They function as adjectives, nouns, and adverbs. Hope this helps! 🌸
