This song hit me hard. I was a raging alcoholic but I finally got sober. After I commented below, soon after everything changed. I got my family back. My kids have told me many times how proud they are of me and that they forgive me. They know that I am doing my best. When my son’s team lost their playoffs, I sent my son a text from this song. “Son, I know you did your best. I know there’s more to you than the wars you lose, you’ll see.” Thank you for giving those words. Through this song, I finally found a way to forgive myself for all that I have done. I now have the ability to be the father I want to be without the shame. I cannot understate how your work helped me. One day, when things are going wrong, I want you to remember that YOUR work brought this broken old man back from a bad place. I can’t help but think God will bless you as you blessed me.

Listening to this song makes me cry, but in a healing way. It actually helps me let go of a lot of the bitterness I have toward my parents. There were a lot of things they did that hurt me, some things even that might have been abusive-but it helps to step back and take a look at the bigger picture. I know that they always loved me, and that they did their best with what they had, even if they weren’t perfect. All of us make mistakes. We’re only human.

Same.Song my philosophy. I don't hold things against my family. As I aged, I made my own mistakes - a light went on. Know my families backgrounds (childhoods). They did better than what they endured. I grew up with my mother, who had NPD, ( narcissists personality disorder), she abused me in every way . I didn't know why, but I knew she had an awful childhood too. We fought eachother constantly, and I skipped state at age 16, before she killed me. Now at age 44, and just out of an abusive 16 year relationship from hell, ( I was moved state and was locked on a house for 4 years by my ex.), I basically had to live thru what she did, to understand her, and how she got her personality disorder , ( from childhood ptsd too, I have BPD - borderline personality disorder). I haven't seen her or any of my family for nearly 5 years now. I've had 9 months to process the damage done to me, and am finally living life !!! I slipped thru the system here, got no psychological help as promised , but I have healed myself, basically!! Right? I'm 51 years old. Veteran. Have struggled with demons my entire adult life. Manged to be a faithful husband, and a roll model to my now 30yo son. However, I succumbed to the evil and drank myself to death in 2021. I was resuscitated, given new blood, and haven't drank since. This song hits home, and is very humbling. I had held animosity towards my parents spending their money on cigarettes rather than their home. Dad is dead now, and mom is on oxygen 24x7. I had a great childhood without abuse. WTF was wrong with me for being angry? They did their best, and don't have shit to prove to me. Miss ya Dad. I'm now trying to be a better man every day, and will follow the path of Christ until my last breath. I hope someday, my son will feel I have nothing left to prove, and that my beautiful wife will forgive me for drinking and nearly making her a young widow.

Girl!!! That first part did me in. My oldest son was diagnosed with autism......at 3 years old, he functioned at a 9 month old level. I accepted that he would always be with me until he was an adult, that he would never get married or have a job and I was ok with that. He passed away in 2015 at 6 years old. I try to stay strong for my other kids but it's hard. Thank you for pouring your heart out into this one. ❤

When my daughter sees me cry, over a movie, over a hard day, she rubs my cheek and gives me a kiss, and I tell her mommy's fine, and I tell her why I'm sad and that its gonna be okay, it's okay to be sad sometimes. Pain is a part of life, sometimes even the best parts. Character, change, these things are birthed from pain. I cant protect my daughter forever, but I can make her feel safe to express herself honestly, and to understand pain isnt something to avoid, you cant see the view of the mountaintop with the harsh climb up.

For what it’s worth I lost my mother to brain cancer in ‘04 and my kids were little. I’ve always told them she became a star so she could watch over them forever and that any time they want to talk to her just look to the night sky and find the brightest star cause that’s her. They’re grown now and still refer to my mom as a star. I shared this to give you the same advice, the brightest star is Granny too, always there for you. I hope 2021 is better and that the fond memories you have of Granny give you comfort. 💛

I wasn't expecting to fall in love with this song. It's so real and hit me right in the chest. My husband used to leave his work boots in the walkways all the time, seemed I tripped on them at least once a day. It's been over four years now, and I still wish I'd trip over them one more time. He worked himself into an early grave at 30, worried he had to prove himself. You're right though, he didn't have shit to prove to me.

Nova, God bless you for making this song. My mom who loved music, never used it to bless and minister to her family, she could have and I wish she had spoken those words to me "I know you did your best". I have recently been struggling with feeling art was a selfish path to take and just seems like it just sucked all the resources out of people because even though I have published a book I am not ashamed of, I have not yet reached the goals I hoped to nor the people I hoped and still hope to. My spouse confronted me with the opposite and alternative to a world without art is in fact barbaric or barbarity. This song is so encouraging to me. I can't help but create. People, more people need to hear this truth and acknowledgement from those around them. Its far to easy to tear down those we grow close to or think we know and rather than spend and invest the time and observance to the efforts of the people around us. I am glad you seek to invest this. Your words from your heart here shine a beauty much needed. Thank you for being you!

I really relate to this…. I’ve come to the conclusion that I am compelled to create constantly lest I destroy myself and the good in anyone else around me if I don’t. It’s how I heal myself and the world I’m in. ❤

Damn Nova, making a grown man tear up over here. This is one of those songs that I believe that everyone needs to hear right now. And I'm one of those people. 21 years of solitude and loneliness on top of 2020 being the biggest kick in the balls. Life is hard but being alive and trying my best is better than the fate of many in the world right now. Thank you Nova!

This brings tears every time. I'm a 44 yr old single dad taking care of my special needs son and my dying mother who is deep off in dementia. It's so brutal and I have no one to help and I'm a fuckup and not the one for the job but it's my responsibility. I don't know where my son's mental will wind up. He's 6 now but I cry thinking about how cruel other children can be to him and I wanna punch their fucking faces in. Or at least their dads. I used to be a rock star in small bars literally with my daughter in the car too and I made that choice to let punk rock go and yep it haunts me daily. I miss it so much but I love my two kids more. Mom going out in a bad way and watching it get worse day by day is really hard. But yeah, this one I watch when I want to let some of it out. Beautiful, sincerely touching song. Nova should get more acclaim herself as a musician and not just a director.
