I was born about 1.5 months after the Barneveld Wisconsin F5 tornado occurred in early june 1984. I think this tornado sparked my interest in tornadoes. Tornadoes are beautiful but also frightening.

As a modern chaser, this video makes me incredibly thankful for the advancements since then. Compared to the data I have today, they folks were chasing comparatively blind. For all my data, I'm sure these old heads can read the sky 100x better than myself and sight chase far better than I ever could. I've been trying to ween myself off the radar while chasing recently cause I feel we rely far too much on it these days. It can certainly be critically helpful and the key to avoiding big time hail and dry line busts, but being able to sight chase is still a critical skill to being a successful chaser

Like others, I watched this many times when it came out. This video got me to become a meteorologist. I ended up becoming an air quality meteorologist but chased and directed storm chase teams at Arizona State University and studying thunderstorms in the southwest. I was privileged to work with the University of Oklahoma and members of NSSL is a joint project to study severe storms and ozone formation in Arizona. My dream came true and watching this some 36 years later is amazing to see how the technology in forecasting has changed.

Very happy this was uploaded. I used to watch this so much when I was a kid. Love the 80s!

Man I used to try to storm chase as a teenager in Ohio in the 90's. Didn't see nothin but a bunch of corn fields! I think the 90s was a period of lull for tornadoes. Now I drive all over -- I've seen plenty of storms and stuff, but never a tornado. I've seen TONS of dust devils out west though! It seemed like a day wouldn't go by without seeing a dust devil driving out there in Nevada, Colorado, Utah and Idaho! Sometimes they are HUGE unlike the videos you see of 'em online. That's kinda ironic because the dust devils are supposed to be super rare compared to tornadoes.

I only seen one dust devil in my whole life. It was very interesting too see and stand by and watch. Was a small one. Been thru 3 tornadoes, 2 ef0s and one ef1. They did some damage too power lines and roofs n trees. Crazy way storms are

This was an incredible episode, from a human storytellling perspective as well as a scientific one. Thank you for uploading it. Incredible producers... and people who told this story. I was almost 7 when this happened and lived northwest of Milwaukee; it made a huge impression on my interest in weather.

I am almost certain there was a NOVA documentary on tornados where shortly after a Tornado a guy was being interviewed said "I didn't hear no woot woots or toots like a train... Just a really loud noise." I want to find that clip so bad!

Nova is so far advanced for a television science show. The things that were shown on Nova 30 to 35 years ago was so advanced that other networks today are still trying to catch up. I’m a big fan of Nova and PBS.

I had never seen this before- super old technology but new to me!!! Now I know where the movie "Twister" came from. Love that movie. Instead of Toto, they named her Dorothy- and of course they had to have conflict for a movie. Silly Hollywood!!! Scientists all work together, yes? No? Oh well.

I miss serious, sober reportage like this, instead of the 'modern' versions of things like NOVA and Frontline that keep up a non-stop musical crescendo to insist on how you should feel about what's being presents, second after second after second. :/

The problem with tornado warnings is that too many which turn out to be false alarms, and after awhile people start to ignore them, and it' sit won't happen tome then it does.then they whine
