Maybe Fiona Bruce hasn't rented before? the whole concept of bidding for rent is a relatively new thing from my experience? last time I was renting it was a property available at a fixed price end of. I don't know if bidding is prevalent in Edinburgh yet, but it is an obvious exploitation, landlords need to register the rental price with the local authority or a third party.

currently going through an eviction at the moment, it's fucking outrageous. the property-owning class has complete executive power over us renters, and there isn't anything legally we can do to fight it. i will say that my tenants' union has been so helpful in providing support and advice. reform will not be won through legislation, but through the self-organisation of the renting class. only collective power will win us better conditions ✊

If a landlord can charge whatever price the market will bear what prevents him or her from taking the person with the highest bid given mass competition for rentals. There is no enforcement mechanism for this. This is Keir just lying again.

I live in Germany. My wife’s a school teacher I was in adult education - now retired. We rent in Hamburg (housing cooperative). My father-in-law was a senior civil servant in Berlin he rented (social flats for civil servants). My brother-in-law is a wealth manager his wife is a teacher they rent. Their daughter (consultant and married to a successful lawyer) rent. I guess it’s all a question what you’re used to.

With renting we desperately need reform in terms of the law. We need a removal of Section 21, a fixed rate on properties and fixed lower rent on properties over 20 years old, more homes and flats built (possibly an alliance between private and local councils), legislation to limit NIMBY's, help to buy. Those would be a good start.

It is only a start. What is really needed is the system Holland had in the early noughties: predominantly renting through independent housing trusts Private landlords are in the main not the way to go. S.21 should go - but all the private landlords will do is raise the rents sky high and force you out this way. Labour should grasp the mettle and as you say, reintroduce rent controls. Labour must abolish the Right to Buy - if long-term tenants want to move into the private sector, they can be rewarded with a lump sum for a deposit.

its illegal to walk into a store and be charged more than the sticker price. this isn't a complicated concept. if you were overcharged at a shop you can report it and get a refund from the shop, your bank or even via the police/courts if necessary. just make it explicit in statute renters can do the same when submitting an application

er that's not true. if you come to the till and whoever is behind the till says that sticker price is wrong they do not need to honour it. It's just a clerical mistake. You're free to purchase at the stated price or leave it. Some stores sometimes operate a system as you describe but its always at management discretion because quite frankly people try it on and move stickers around.

How to end rent bidding wars? Landlords to state what the rent will be in the advance and that is the rent for that property. Make it illegal to change the rent a property is advertised at for a year after it rented. Increase the number of social housing as it’s clear that the private sector is incapable of providing sufficient housing for people.

With renting I would like to see regulations on amount of rent. It used to be that landlords expected to have a fully paid for asset at the end of the mortgage term. Now they are expecting not only to have their asset and costs paid for. But for too long many landlords are also expecting an income over and above. Rent controls need to be put in place. When they get a private rental property it should be assessed how much a mortgage would be on that property, plus a generous amount for costs, repairs, expected renonvations, and that should be all they can charge. At the moment you have landlords charging many multiples of what a mortgage would cost on the property - they got used to this while interest rates were low, and now they are higher they want to keep the same income they are used to as well as getting a fully paid for asset. It’s just one example of the rabid profiteering everywhere now.

Germany have set prices landlords can charge based on square footage of a property. City zones have a higher rate than suburbs. But the price is set by government. Landlords can’t charge over the set rate. Has the bonus effect of making buy to let property less attractive, therefore bringing house prices down as there is less competition from investment buyers. As a Libertarian National Centrist I am very much on each individual citizen and resident's side, not The State / Housing Associations / Corporations in this case.. Home ownership is basic, tax breaks if you don't own one too (will help towards rent). -- It's not students that are the problem, it's those that come here as a couple, often don't learn the lingo, work in a factory while us English Workers have to pay, treat and house not just English non-workers but loads of foreign ones too we're that FAR TOO GENEROUS. There are so many people that could do a few half or whole days in a factory a week. Left right dichotomy doesn't explain the political landscape of this election. When reframed as "right" rich vs "right" working class/poor, the popularity of traditionally left-wing policies with "right" audiences starts to make more sense to me. Starmer is going for the rich, more educated, urban populations and Farage is catering to the working class. It's scary that he's going to be successful and people don't seem to be calling this out.

Here's the thing to watch out for if you talking from a leftish viewpoint. Most of the Tory seats that are going to be lost will be on the right. That generally means fewer MPs on that side to get caught up in weird stuff. Prediction: Labour will have a large number of MPs across, not just a huge political spectrum, but a huge personal and social spectrum. What that means in turn is that you're going have, probably, a high by-election turnover rate because amongst all those Labour MPs, in spite of all the vetting, some serious bad apples are going to appear based on simple statistics. It might only cause small problems; or it might totally let rip. The Conservatives that remain will sit and eat their popcorn.

I never thought I'd agree with something Farage says, but raising the starting income tax threshold would bring millions out of poverty and close the wealth gap substantially. More of us on the left need to stop pushing this myth of us living in a tax-and-spend society, whereas the government issues the currency and taxation is one vehicle of inflation control. Also, there's nothing wrong with taxing the rich more, and in 1966 the top tax rate was set at 95%.

The government issues the currency, it borrows nothing, and taxation is just one of many mechanisms for controlling inflation, the money is always there for things like war but when it comes to public services we're told "There's no magic money tree".
