I appreciate you clarifying that the "rich" are families with massive amounts of assets rather than higher-income workers like doctors. A big problem in American politics is the poor being under the misapprehension that professional workers that earn a decent wage are the problem. People with no concept of the difference between a million and a billion dollars think everyone with more than them is "rich" and it seems to block useful coalitions from forming.
@skyblazeeternoКүн бұрын
True. Here in the UK the average income is approximately £30,000 a year so imo people earning over £100,000 are rich and can afford to pay a bit more tax. But the super rich are beyond that and sneaky so you'd need to tax assets namely property
@artschool673Күн бұрын
Well, yeah, but there is also a problem that you seem to fail to see, which is that those with high salaries do not think that the system has to change because they are fine. The other way around, wealth inequality is a symptom of asset price increases.
@lonevoiceКүн бұрын
@@TomRaine The main problem with the wealthy is that they are unable to spend enough. Even when they spend a lot and as much as they want, they always have a surplus of income over expenditure which they then invest. They buy assets such as shares and property and with rising wealth inequality there is an increasing amount of money chasing a relatively fixed amount of assets. The consequence is that asset prices increase. The other side of this is that with increasing wealth inequality there is an increasing flow of money from the wealthy out of the active economy into asset purchases and asset prices. It then becomes an increasing drain on the active economy and becomes increasingly problematic to manage. It is the flow of money out of the active economy that is the real problem. There is of course a further knock on effect in that assets such as property then give rise to increased rents etc. This further increases the income of the wealthy and an even grater flow into assets but at the same time the active economy takes a further hit as increased rents diminish the spending power of the population.

@edmond5713 I don't see how taxing the super rich will negatively affect 99% of people, it will actually help small businesses by increasing aggregate demand as poorer people have increased access to capital, this increases the velocity of money and increases economic efficiency The super rich don't just get wealthy by investing in high growth businesses, they get wealthy by avoiding tax, exploiting workers, nepotism and corruption. Your assumption is that 1) high growth businesses are inherently good 2) investment in those high growth businesses is inherently good and 3) Those businesses are growing due to a beneficial manner, these three assumptions are unfounded most of the time. Yes giving out loans to startups is good but it's not necessarily good to invest in them for equity and then just because a business grows quickly does not make it good, if it produces net negative externalities then it obviously makes it bad. You simply have too many unfounded assumptions, rich people aren't necessarily rich because they benefited society, businesses aren't necessarily good because they're growing quickly and increasing the effective tax rate on profitable businesses and wealthy people isn't inherently bad because it reduces market instability

The section on the gym being more popular because it is a way to have some control and have an outlet where you can work hard and actually get a proportionate return is a good insight. We can also see the same thing in the hikikomori. They aren't merely withdrawing to a room to do nothing, they are moving to a place they have control of to do hobbies where if they want to 'study' their hobby to become an expert in it, they can. This is also where Tate and similar get their audience- telling them that the lack of control and ability to progress they are experiencing is someone else's fault. Yes, exactly! And 'austerity' will result from this. The Gov't can't really go 'bankrupt', as such, as it can always create money to spend - that's the point. China deflated their housing bubble precisely for this reason, however painful in the short term, and however unpopular with the wealthy and the multiple-propertied classes. This is why China is so demonized by the Angloamerican media : because their system is the polar opposite of the Western system which makes the rich richer and keeps the majority in increasing servitude and poverty. The trouble is that not only is there income equality between people there is also income inequality between countries. The rich countries out bid the poorer countries for their resources. The UK takes the soil and raw materials of poorer countries to supply us with food, materials and energy. This transfer of these resources creates the UK consumer economy and is the root of neo-colonialism and the destruction of the global ecosystem.

It's interesting, yet unsurprising that not a single major political party even addresses income inequality. And Starmer just said a few weeks ago at an investor summit that he looked forward to working with Blackrock to transform the UK. Unbelievable!

Not a single political party or media outlet pick up on the growing growth inequality - is because they are run by the billionaires.

I feel like I go to work every day for nothing, everything I earn just goes on survival so it's very difficult to have any sort of motivation and I imagine I'm not alone here. Something drastic needs to change for this malaise to be lifted in the UK.

Check out a few other folks that speak out on these issues like Gary does: Economist Richard D. Wolff. He hits on the same things as Gary too. Economist Joseph Stiglitz also mentions similar concepts too. Robert Reich is another economist, and was also former Labor Secretary to President Bill Clinton. They all do a great job at explaining similar concepts. Kudos of course though to Gary too! He really has a unique back story, worked in big finance, and he is by far the youngest one speaking out which is great. He has a flair for explaining these concepts in a different way.

Garry you are 100% correct about taxing the rich, but regarding migration as a policy, it has the following effects which shouldn't be ignored completely: - Suppress wages (supply/demand). - Reduce rental vacancy rates (they need somewhere to live). - Increase tax rate (good for federal government). - Increase strain in infrastructure and healthcare (not federal govt problem but becomes state's problem). - Increases house prices (in the case that wealthy migrants encouraged to come over and buy property - like in Australia).

Gary Stevenson’s insights are a wake-up call on wealth inequality and the systemic issues fueling it. His straightforward critique of how resources are hoarded and how policies fail to address the root causes is both refreshing and alarming. Love the part where he explains why the rich keep getting richer and the rest are left competing for scraps-it’s a stark reality we need to confront. His analogy of housing being a hedge, not an inflation buffer, is pure gold. Thanks for shedding light on topics mainstream narratives often miss.

The “resources,”, were what we had as a nation of communities , wealth as “commons”, nationalised assets, municipal wealth like council housing and other assets, even MacMillan recognised this as the nations “family silver. All benefited from this, perhaps not always competently used. You can add to this the de- mutualization . All these processes involved the fire selling of common assets to those with the ability to buy . This launched the increase of wealth inequality. This policy was helped by funding from North Sea oil. That’s gone , we are left with the rotten fruits of Thatcherism .
@bradmodd78562 күн бұрын
The UK is wealthy, imperial money is still there, wealthy nations are suffering from being on top because our economies are not growing compared to the emerging economies. The poor will have to pickup the slack. Best plan is to be like Gary and not be poor yet have time to be sympathetic and politically active.
@sedgieroobets2 күн бұрын
We need a new conversation about property rights. This is one of the foundations of democracy which is why many people get very anxious when you talk about 'taking away, or heavily taxing, assets'. But it needs to be reframed - as Gary has done elsewhere - that the rich have in fact taken away (or simply been given, by useless successive governments) our assets, which were previously held in common through our government.

This interview is probably the most important interview out there at the moment. Great stuff, if you also added stuff about the failure to talk about the real economy, regional inequality etc it would really nail the problem that the UK is in. In the industrial revolution it was driven by investment in innovative entrepreneurs actually making things with an aspiring working class and a growing middle class driving it along. That aspiration was also driven by the desire for better standards to solve societal problems which in turn created growth and reinvestment. We now have a hollowed out middle class, a poor working class, the super rich and lazy passive income with accumulated assets. Economic talk is of fiscal tinkering not the real economy and society. This is not sustainable.

First time commenting here; fantastic interview. So, I’m a expat Brit living in Japan teaching at a national university; we get subsidised accommodation - the equivalent of 75 quid a month. This is pretty normal here for people working in the civil service, for companies, etc. Makes all the difference; I earn ok money, nothing special, but decent, and that rent means I can lead a decent life. Aside from everything that Gary is saying, giving people affordable housing would be a big help. I get it - Japanese demographics are not the same - but surely we can do what we used to do and give working people at least the option of affordable housing… And great Japanese language skills from Gary!

Hi Gary, i grew up in a council house. Thatcher allowed them to be sold off. That was the problem. Councils cant afford to do it and landlords find it too risky. I think its got to the point that the state has to take responsibility to provide the housing so people can move to where the work is. Cheers Conrad

At 100% debt/GDP and 5% yield the British are pumping 5% of GDP in government guaranteed basic income perfectly proportional to how much money one already owns, you could not devise a more regressive policy even if you tried. This is literally basic income proportional to how much you already have. Absolute insanity, how is inflation supposed to come down when you pump 5% of GDP into the economy just through interest payments?
@Ocean_drifter972 күн бұрын
OK, but why do we need inflation to come down? It's not very high.
@belindathorne97842 күн бұрын
Before covid economists were saying we need to raise the 2% inflation target, in order to erode debts.
