This is the story of Rachel, an enslaves woman working on a sugar plantation, who has borne several children, some of whom survived birth but were taken from her also into slavery.
She is a mother and there comes a point when she needs to know their fate. She takes the opportunity to escape and see if she can discover their fate, as she needs to know so she can drawn a line under the uncertainty.
She embarks on an odyssey, always mindful that there is a price on her head as a runaway slave. In England slavery is being abolished but here there is still too much tied up commercially to bow to the will of the english authorities.
As she makes her way across land and sea, she meets people her on her journey, she keeps her ear to the ground and through sorrow and joy she can finally find some peace.
This is very evocative of time and place and we have chosen this novel as our Book Of The Month January 2023.
