November, 2023 Layout Update
**Post production note: it seems the uploaded sound is off a bit in spots…not enough to redo the upload, but apologies nonetheless**
Welcome back to the layout! Introducing Iron City Sand & Gravel! The last bit of remodeling called for the moving of the Chillicothe depot to the planned expansion. In its place, I wanted an industry with a decent amount of switching. I already had the gravel crusher building, and I added the sand loader to go with it. Both industries seem to be springing up on old lines all over these days, so I felt this was fitting.
The complex can handle 6 sand hoppers and up to 9 rock hoppers, depending on car length. It is switched by either the Ironton yard job, or the northbound Oak Hill turn. Both are featured in the video.
Additionally, the north end of Railroad Street received a bit of a makeover in this process. A new tavern from Woodland Scenics, a custom 3D printed corner store from Etsy, and several added lights and details round out the update for this round.

Great video, wondrously modeled layout... as a model RR fan and audio producer, my comment was going to be about your AMAZING sound--quit obsessing over that, no one but you will notice! This is such fascinating work on every level.

Who needs to go rail fanning anymore? All levels of your skill set in modeling are displayed in one of the best switching layouts/and narrative in a video i have seen.

I love your Sound Fx! Seems a lot more realistic than most. Particularly “the clang” as rolling stock moves over the joints in track, and love the screeching of the brakes! If you don’t mind, what Sound System do you use and how do you record and fit the appropriate sound with the timing of the action? I’ve been out of the hobby for over 30 years. I’m 69 and thinking about jumping back into N Scale or HO with what time I have left. (Unfortunately, I have Pancreatic Cancer and have been on Chemo for the last 5 years! It appears my cancer was caught earlier than most and the treatment, although somewhat brutal at times with the side effects, has been working in my case. I’m like 6-10 % of the population with Pancreatic Cancer.) Glad not to be hearing a bell ringing constantly. That gets old with me really fast. INSPIRATION: Christmas of 1998, my son was 6 years old and I thought it was time for a train set under/around the tree! I bought a BNSF AC 44 O Scale Engine that came with 4 BNSF Double Stack Well Cars. I set the train up, but the cats were trouble almost from the get go. The O Scale Set was put away until Christmas of 2023. From 2011 until 2023, with College, Med School, Internal Medicine Residency, my son was rarely home. He had been down East in Philadelphia or New Jersey. But, I was 5 years into my Cancer and he was going to be home for Christmas of 2023. He had to work the previous 4-5 holidays. Well, the Railroad was set up around the tree. To my surprise after 25 years, the diesel engine still made smoke and for a while the sound Fx worked. Everyone thought the train was great! The boxes were in pristine condition and after January 2024, the train went back into storage. Will it appear in 2024? We shall see, or there may be another scale under the tree.

Beautiful... What sound decoder do you have in the loco ? Do you also have car sound decoder in one of the freights? Is it in the caboose? ,thanks ,joe

There are no sound decoders on the layout. I never use it so I don’t pay for it. These sounds are dubbed in. Just my preference ☺️

Like the sound effects. Where’d you find them?
@ModernDTI

It’s audio from my own railfan videos as well as those from others whom I’ve asked to use snips of theirs. It’s pretty time consuming, and I hope to one day be able to program a keyboard with the various sounds from a decoder to “play” them for videos.

All sounds are prototype sounds dubbed in while editing. The models themselves are silent.
