Starting my first ever garden this month, and I'm so excited for all your tips! I've been composting for a while now, and I need an excuse to use all this fertile soil that I'm producing! Plus, you gotta love a new project! One day, I hope to transform my yard into a wildlife oasis, but those big dreams need to start somewhere!

Evelyn from Brandon, and back to gardening after a forced hiatus! Bought some tomato and pepper starts over a month ago and they are exploding!! Can’t wait to start this weekend my cool weather veggies. With El Niño predicting to bring us more rain but also more storms this winter, hope it’s a blessing for the garden 😅

Hurricane Idalia flood water killed most of my plants! Took me a while to get motivated to plant again but finally got some winter green started ….. thanks for the motivation

My first year gardening and i think i transplanred way too soon. Most of my early crops have been deatroyed by bugs. But i learned so it's not a waste!

@@honeybee52000 I was a little late when planting this fall. I usually like end of august but we had such hot weather. So beginning of September is when I planted in ground

I would just add: If you see insect damage on your veg at this time of year, try to avoid reaching for the pesticides. Palm Warblers, Carolina Wrens and Bluebirds are here and will clean your plants in the mornings and evenings.

Good point! Absolutely! I have birds checking out all my veggie babies... bugs are so crucial to our birds.

well, since you asked, I grew Roma tomatoes and Early girls from seed and ended up with end rot on the Romas and never knew how much squirrels like green tomatoes. We ended up with one and 1/2. So, I started seeds again in early September, and bought Rainbow Pepper seeds, what they heck. Well, 7 of my tiny pepper plants were eaten, but I do have a good supply of Early girl babies. I know, I know, probably not the best time but I am so angry about my earlier crop. I am growing cilantro, garlic chives and bunching onions, and a few lettuce types. I didn't educate myself on that one earlier. I live in St Pete, 5 miles from the gulf and it's still miserably hot here. My grow bags are ready and I could probably transplant the tomatoes but worried about the critters. I wanted to ask, will the pepper plants still grow through the bug netting? I now have "volunteer" green bean plants, will they produce? They didn't over the summer but I have TONS of them now. What can I do? Thank you!

I love your determination! Green beans can grow now. So I would leave them. Maybe you can clarify what you mean by peppers growing through bug netting. Wishing you the best 🥰

I was wondering, what's your opinion on adding coffee grounds to or around your garden to prevent bugs from coming in?
@WildFloridian
@WildFloridian Жыл бұрын
I honestly don't have an opinion about coffee grounds. I don't know how useful they are for preventing bugs. My method is to keep diverse wildlife supported in the garden and pests will be kept in check. Just saw a blue jay hopping around my veggie seedlings... probably grabbing bugs.

I had a Carolina Wren couple move into the top tier of one of my Greenstalks early in the summer. Luckily for us, it's viewable from our patio, so we got to see the tons of bug runs they did to their nest! I heard they can have more than one brood a season, so I left the nest alone after the babies left (we got to see that too!), and they came back for a second batch of babies later in the summer! ❤ That tier is now the wren tier, with just some parsley growing out of 4 holes, the rest is bird entrances. Read they often claim a territory and will come back year after year, so keeping their nest and hoping we'll see them again. Maybe not a coincidence we had so little problems with bugs this summer!?

My goldenrod is going crazy i planted it after i saw your video showing the area to the left of your arched walkway. the did nothing all summer (as expected) but now they are glorious!!! I also have a question: i have a packet of wildflower seeds from a local garden tour, which are 100% native. is this a good time to put them into a wildflower meadow, or should i wait until spring? Zone 10a St Pete. Thanks!

Hmm, maybe after I've pulled the sweet potatoes from my VegeGa bed, I'll plant some white potatoes! Any suggestions on what type and where to buy? I have never grown white potatoes before.
