The intake boot is molded rubber around a metal plate, odds are an intake screw got left a little loose by accident and it vibrated further out causing it to leak more. The boot is the same as a 362 boot and I’ve never had one of them leak. As far as the design of the boot it attaches to the cylinder very similarly to a husky 562 boot.

Air leak seems real small. Once that issue is resolved, make sure to use threadlock on the bolts. Would you be able to use a piece of thin gasket? I’ve seen those sheets of performance base gasket material that is 3 thou thick. Might be perfect for this application. Either that or just a light coat of motoseal. Once sealed up, do that reset process again and I bet she will be running sweet. I would also probably go for a chain with a bit less grab to it. You’ll get it running good.

I like the 400 platform but for the price I'd rather have the 7310 ported. I think it's a better saw just because it's simple and has a carb with manual settings. Also it has a stiffer antivibe for the longer bars. But the 400 has its own place in the line up. Once you get that air leak fixed, it will be a great bucking saw.
@christopherlehman404511 ай бұрын
The echo is bigger you should be comparing the 462 carb saw at 72cc.
@ragercrepair930111 ай бұрын
@@christopherlehman4045 OK the echo is 72ish cc, the stihl is 67 for over a grand...... I don't think I would say they are that far off in size. The 460 is a great saw and has adjustable carb which imo is better than electronic controlled 2 stroke period. The small engines don't need all that extra bullshit especially if you're going to port them. Much easier to modify a standard carb. As far as comparing the two, I still feel the 7310 is a better value beings a ported 7310 mops the floor with a stock 500i which is way more money than either the 400 or the 7310. All I was stating was dollar for dollar, I'd take the echo hands down. Be interesting to see what a ported 7310 does against the ms400.
@christopherlehman404511 ай бұрын
It will probably beat it but like I said the 462 is the 7310 size and they make that great standard carb. Stock for stock the 7310 is the slowest and heaviest of the 72cc saws, and after all three are ported it’s still the slowest . The mtronic has no issues keeping up with a ported woods saw as long as the saws air tight. All in all a mtronic or autotune is still just a carb saw with much better fine tuning. Overly rich saw’s aren’t good either because of carbon build up and possibly carbon scoring.
@ragercrepair930111 ай бұрын
@@christopherlehman4045 oh I don't disagree with that at all. That's one of the main reasons ever saw I have has a muffler mod. I just don't like the auto adjusting stuff. I never have. And the fact that you have to use torque specs to not crush and intake is also bullshit. The reset procedure is a joke. The saw should always be looking for the best idle and the best mid/top end performance automatically. I think they need to cut the bullshit out and use an air fuel ratio sensor to eliminate that problem as well. That's pretty much an oxygen sensor. If the would go with the like of the 500i with straight fuel injection, I would be more interested personally. When I bought my 800p I hated how slow it cut. Loads of torque, but no speed. I had Brisco port it and it's a completely different animal. So I agree the echo is the slowest in stock form. But the echos love the muffler mods and timing advances. After that, they keep up with anyone else for the most part. I see your point now that I read the last comments again. Lol. Sometimes I get ahead of myself.
@christopherlehman404511 ай бұрын
The mtronic saws do compensate for muffler and port work rather well actually. And I’ve never torqued a 362 boot to a spec just tighten it down in a cross pattern. No leaks on any so far and the 400 uses same intake it has a plate molded into it just like a 562 husky so I think this is a fluke because they normally don’t leak. Maybe a screw didn’t get tightened by accident and slowly backed out causing more and more of an air leak. You can definitely hear the saw hunt at idle which is what an autotune/mtronic will do at idle while it’s trying to overcome an air leak.

Absolutely brother! When a professional tree guy can’t diagnose and possibly repair his own work saw and needs to take it to the dealership??? They lost their focus! The old O-series were just absolutely rugged and dependable tools my only issue with the auto tune models is that they didn’t design in a selector so that a professional could tune 500-800 rpm’s rich… that is what allows that decade plus of professional work life cycle from a professional level tool. They should offer you a basic reading and reset software package with the professional saw’s so you can just use your laptop instead of needing to waste your time taking your equipment into a dealer… I try to use the simplest systems so you don’t have unnecessary downtime…

Mtronic isn’t that complicated, also overall very reliable and actually saves many saws that do develop an air leak from blowing up. But I did switch the company to my 38:1 type mixture with a good semisynthetic oil and the 261’s have definitely started running much better and stronger with some extra oil in their mix…. @@DaveyBlue32 I have heard that the m-tronic and autotune will run sometimes when it shouldn’t. Like what was said, they can compensate for an air leak. My mechanic has a love hate relation with them. Loves how they automatically tune, hates how they’ll run around an air leak.
@christopherlehman404511 ай бұрын
You don’t really have to have the scanner most of the time on an mtronic, Buy one or two solenoids to go through and test the saws. The most common failure on an mtronic saw is a worn solenoid from dirty fuel. Also make sure to use the orange filter and change it regularly. So on all those saws make sure their air tight, clean carb and install a diaphragm kit and new solenoid. See how it gos if the new solenoid doesn’t make them work try same one in next saw.

Right? No. Neither of those things is true. It's a finicky fucking saw that is over-hyped and Stihl is a marketing company that has done a fantastic job and making folks like you hold them in high esteem. LOL, hahaha. You are such a comedian. Can't believe you made such an oversight. Now go on and tell me some other bullshit about you liking them all and I'm biased, bla bla bla. You've always got some bullshit to say and I'm getting sick of it. I can't believe you're trying to pin this on anyone other than Stihl. If you can't tighten the carb bolts as you normally do without warping the flange, that's pathetic. You should be ashamed for suggesting it was because we modified it. Downright pisses me off.
