Yeah, it definitely is that. I used to hate people messing with the viewing ratio but now I'm in widescreen I can see it for what it is a lot more. I think WW1984 did it recently and it was really the only part I enjoyed. But yeah, I think this oppressive square ratio is so good for forcing the viewer to think on what's outside the lens and for forcing them to focus on what's within it. It just provides a really high degree of control over where the audience is looking. Thanks for watching dude!

If you enjoyed the claustrophobic atmosphere I recommend you check out Son of Saul. It's a Hungarian film about a jewish prisoner-made guard at Auschwitz. The aspect ratio is 1.375:1 and with the exception of the first and last scenes the film consists exclusively of close-ups following the main character through his hellish adventures in the camp. There are no long shots, there is no relief. It feels like you're there in the camp with the main character, a truly morbid and unique experience.

Prolly nobody will read that after 4 years, but J wanted to say how amazing job you did and how helpful this video was. Also in reference to this interpretation that Howard killed Winslow, as we know Howard said that after “the accident” he only wanted to smoke. We can also see that first thing he does after realisation he killed Wake, is smoking a cigarette which confirm that he killed Winslow in first place.

The scream of the siren drives sailors to their doom, Ulysses fills his ears with wax, ties himself to the mast. I am reminded of the songs 'Home at Last' by Steely Dan, and 'Tales of Brave Ulysses' by Cream, both songs of existential desolation and loneliness, the striving of men. Great analysis of the film Novum, I very much enjoyed it having watched this film earlier today. Impressive presentation!

I’m pretty surprised that such a thorough breakdown failed to mention meaning of the gull Howard murdered. The left eye was missing, just like the head of Howard’s predecessor, & Wake said gulls contained the souls of dead sailors. The shared disfigurement & taunting of Howard is a giveaway, but also Wake’s violent reaction to Howard scoffing at the notion the birds were more than pests. In this context I believe the lighthouse station is more a metaphor for the afterlife & the light is an ascension to a kind of heaven, “relief” or “salvation” as the former assistant believed. Wake is gatekeeper (likely a dead soul himself who is just as drawn to the light but can restrain himself because he has duties to fulfill) who eventually gets Howard to confess his sins. Howard’s response to knowing his own unworthiness is to force his way into the light. The light of course rejects him & he falls into purgatory, consumed by & thus becoming a gull just like the man in his place before him.

Yeah deffo on first watch I assumed it was all some kind of purgatory deal where Poseidon or suchlike (Dafoe, or perhaps he's a ferryman figure) is weighing up Pattinson's soul for drowning a man in Hudson Bay. I took the brutal gull killing to suggest that despite his insistence to the contrary he did actually kill the guy rather than just watching, since he's shown to be a big liar shortly beforehand anyway & the gull killing shows he's inclined to violence.

One thing I noticed on rewatches were the Sisyphus references as well. Winslow/Howard pushes the oil tank up stairs only to be told he must push it down again. In the final moments he ascends to the light and is then pushed down again. I think this speaks to a cyclical/purgatory-like punishment for Howard/Winslow and maybe what causes him so much fear at the end when he sees into the light-he realizes his eternal punishment - emphasized by that final image of his body strewn across the rocks being picked apart by gulls. Both Sisyphus and Prometheus.

This was brilliantly done. You've dug into every crevice of this movie and elucidated everything. enjoyed this very much. the depth of your analysis is amazing. @Novum_YT
@Novum_YT 2 жыл бұрын
You're spot on about Canady, from discussing it with people in the comments here I'm 100% certain you're right. I think there is still an element of feminization or perceived canadian softness in the delivery though. Akin to how an Englishman at the time may have looked at a frenchman where they see it as a softer version of manhood. Thank you so much for your praise, honestly, that comment about Eggers made me smile (although that man is a genius so I'm sure he still has far more to show/teach us. My Personal interpretation of this film wasn't homosexual. It's about how isolation and loneliness can drive a person mad. The two men are isolated at a light house in new England. The setting and surroundings take over with Pattinson's sexual visions. He also sees Defoe's character come in his mind because that is the only person he sees every day. Pattinson's loneliness even in vision can't get rid of him. Same with the sea interfering as well. He wants to vision a woman but is interrupted by it being a mermaid. The tentacles are suffocating him because he is suffocating not seeing what he desires. I really like how you can totally see two different interpretations and it can be just as valid.

That's a lovely and well worded write up dude, thanks so much for that. I absolutely agree with what you've said in terms of it's not homosexuality so much as the sexuality of necessity and isolation. For the most part 'homosexuality' is a bit of an umbrella term here. Thanks so much for watching and taking the time to comment, I'm routinely impressed by the discussion below this video!

I would also want to remark about how what you refer to as prison homosexuality is as much asserting ones own dominance as it is sexuality so the implied rape scene could very much be interpreted to be a matter of Man overpowering and asserting his dominance over the Gods as it is about Ephraim embracing his closeted homosexuality.

There is a moment in the film that immediately gave me the impression of the God vs Man struggle is when wake tells Howard to mop a spot on the floor and Howard says he’s mopped and scrubbed it and wake goes on a long drawn out description of tedious and unnecessary work that Howard will do if/when wake commands. What really gave it away is that wake tells Howard that he will follow his commands with a smile on his face because he will like it which reminds me of Sisyphus’ punishment to roll the boulder up a hill bc it is his punishment from the gods but some theorize he does it smiling because he is known for outsmarting the gods. The only way to outsmart a god/gods when they take pleasure in your eternal struggle is to smile through it. The same way when you see on tv someone being tortured by another person and the person being tortured is smiling or laughing it makes the person torturing them angry and upset as they are there to break them and hurt them.

I saw an interpretation for this movie that blew my mind. It’s something along the lines of wake and Howard being the same person at different ages. The interpretation is that the movie is the human psyche of a man with a guilty conscience is a purgatory like state torturing himself for what he’s done in his life. There is little but good evidence for this as the gull Howard kills is missing a left eye the same as the predecessor Howard claims wake murdered after he discovered the body. The reason wake is so upset about Howard fighting with gulls is because of his guilty conscience of killing Howard’s predecessor. Also they’re both named Tom. I’d speculate that Howard had homosexual relations with Winslow and killed him and went on the run and grew old as wake where he murdered another man. It could also be part of the reason wake sees through Howard as he asks Howard why he became a wickie and wake asks him if he on the run. Similar to how a guilty conscience would penetrate a lie someone tells themselves. Howard is also desperate for the light and wake is selfish with it as they’re both seemingly obsessed with it. It seems wake is an old man bent on torturing himself for his past of regret (Howard) with making him work hard and being unfair and cruel to himself. And Howard is desperate to escape his past through “relief” such as drinking, sexual desire, and the light. Howard says he dreams to go build him a house where nobody can tell him nothing which is exactly what wake is like as he tolerates zero input from his subordinate. wake believes he is above criticism or being questioned about his demands. I think wakes symmetry to a Poseidon like figure alludes to a future version of Howard that has become enmeshed with his station at the sea. I like how the movies portray their insanity as the beginning makes you believe Howard is sound of mind and wake is crazy but then it flips later in the film to make wake seem more believable. I think this is done to show Howard’s journey through insanity. I believe they’re both equally insane by the end of the film but wake is more believable as an old man who is aged and grounded in his insanity as Howard is the young one being driven insane unable to deal with losing his mind and wake is completely gone already which is why hes so much more believable towards the end as he’s an old man with less emotional stake in his sanity. Making him more comfortable with gaslighting Howard and being abusive is his unreasonable demands of him. I think their sexual tension reflects one character as a whole grappling with his homosexuality and his desire vs his denial. Also another weird detail I think Howard falls absolutely snaps his leg and wake has a bad leg also that he lies about
@tridentninja1244
@tridentninja1244 4 ай бұрын
Also wanted to say I think this movie is brilliant and I think the actual context of the movie isn’t important in “figuring out” what’s going on. I think what’s important is both characters behavior and the littler details into their past and who they are. I don’t think it matters who is right on how long it’s been since they missed their boat whether it’s been two days or weeks. I think what’s important is how both characters react to the distress of not knowing when the boat will come get them. This movie reminds me a lot of a dream. Dreams aren’t necessarily important in context and are often confusing. What usually matters in the dream are subtle things like small details, characters, atmosphere, how you are feeling emotionally
@tridentninja1244
@tridentninja1244 4 ай бұрын
Little edit: I think whats important in dreams is how you are feeling emotionally about what happening to you or around you and less about what is actually happening. Like being naked in a dream isn’t necessarily important but if you are feeling anxious about being naked in the dream the core message is usually about being ashamed of who you are

This was a amazing video, Thanks so much for all the work you put into this. I'm sorry that it seems KZbin did a silly towards you because a video made this well it's a shame it's not getting the attention it deserves. I wanna say right now the main thing I like about this video is you don't feel the need to speak 100 miles per hour, you take your time with telling everything and that, that we need more of. As someone who gets overstimulated it feels lately by too much noise, too fast of speech and etc, it's nice to be able to listen to a video (I typically multi-task with watching/listening to videos and doing other tasks) and not feel like it's bringing me anxiety from overload on the senses. Enough on the quality of the video and more on the subject the video is on about. I finished watching the movie a few hours ago and out of the videos I found seeing what people said the movie was about, yours is the best. I love how the comparisons to mythology (pardon if not using the right term) with the gods and titans, because watching this movie it was a lot to unpack but I did sense and suspect there was some mythology up in there. As for all the sexuality, I did pick up on that but I didn't really realize the full depth of it like you describe. It's honestly a interesting movie because it has psychological aspects from the characters past and behaviors, but it also has the other side of the coin that makes you wonder what is real and isn't. I've always been intrigued by how the mind works when it comes to madness, how it flips things on us as either a defense or just avoiding confronting the sins(?). Anywho, enough rambling. Thanks for this video and I appreciate all the time and effort you put into it. I'll take a dive in your other content as well. Keep up the good work!

Regarding Howard turning the body around and seeing himself after "spilling his beans", the body is actually wearing the real Ephraim Winslow's clothes. I just double-checked and it's the exact coat (check the distinct sleeve pattern) he wears in Howard's memories/flashbacks of him.

Truly enjoyed your breakdown of the movie. I have already seen the film and was confused about the deep lunacy that Rob’s character seems to spiral down into. You have totally cleared up a lot of the imagery that I just wasn’t sure if it was supernatural in nature or if it was all in Rob’s character’s mind. It was awesome. I too loved this film. It reminded me of the Hitchcock films that too were in beautiful black and white. Cinematically this film was truly beautiful and I’ve listened to what Eggers described as how they went about filming this. I truly miss films that are two different characters interacting with just each other and no special effects just pure dramatic perfection. I’m as excited about this film as you are because of the nuances the beautiful cinematic views and the amazing performances. 5 Stars from me. Do you break down other films? If so, please let me know. I’m very glad that you are back to being healthy. Everyone should be so fortunate but it’s just not to be. Say a grateful prayer and I’ll say one for you also Sweetie. By the way, I’m a 47 yr old married Mother and I’m always obsessed with amazing cinema from all corners of the planet. Do you breakdown foreign films or perhaps older films from an earlier time when drama reigned supreme? Thank you so much Sweetheart. Sorry I run on and on but you excited me about the mythos of this beautiful noir film.☺️ Take care.

Wow Kerry, thanks so much for taking the time to send me such a thoughtful message. I couldn't agree more with your praise for the film, and Eggers himself. Thanks so much for your concerns and prayers also, it means a lot! I absolutely do breakdown other movies and there is lots more content coming very soon! I do enjoy foreign cinema, although I'll admit my experiences with it are limited. If you have any suggestions though, I'd love to check them out! I *love* older cinema, although again I would love to hear suggestions as I'm not as experienced as I'd like to be. So glad I could get you excited about mythos and noir! Thanks again for your kind words, take care and best wishes!

when i watched this film for the first time, i viewed Wake’s contradiction of what we saw in the film as a form of emotional and psychological manipulation, a way to establish a hierarchy of power almost. my knowledge of greek mythology is very limited, so i had never viewed it through that lens. however, this review has essentially entirely changed my view on the film. i recently watched the film a second time, then immediately came to this video, and it has completely changed the way i felt about it. this was so well done and i’m so happy this video was made. just saying that a full commentary on the film would be an incredible insight.
