The fact is that although the Northeast is politically and geographically a part of India, it is actually inhabitated by people from the mongoloid race. So, ethnically and linguistically we are more closely related to East Asia. Almost entire Northeast India was previously known as Kamrupa kingdom and ruled by dynasties belonging to the Sino-tibetan linguistic family of the Mongoloid stock which includes Chinese, Tibetans, Burmese, and many more. This land was originally inhabitated by the Sino-tibetan and the Austroasiatic tribes who arrived some 4000-5000 years ago, intermarried among themselves, cleared forests and started civilisation in the region. Due to this fusion, Northeast Indians may be more related to Burmese or Khmer than to Chinese or Korean. Linguistically, the Sino-tibetans are represented by tribes like Bodo-Kacharis family(18 tribes in total, including my tribe i.e. Chu-Tiya), Nagas, Arunachali, Karbi, Mishing, Manipuris and Mizos, while the Austroasiatics are represented by Khasis and Jaintias of Meghalaya, although genetically we are all the same. Over time, other immigrants from the East and West arrived and started living along with us. The Eastern immigrants are represented by the Tai linguistic groups while the Western immigrants belonged to the Aryo-Dravidian groups. As for Assam which is the largest among all the states, it is dominated by the mongoloid groups who speak a language called Assamese which has Indo-aryan origins but heavily influenced by the Sino-tibetan Bodo languages.
