I experienced a similar situation. I was in a car accident while carrying concealed. I have no memory of this encounter (knocked unconscious with severe concussion), but the responding police officer told me the following story when I contacted him several days later to arrange the return of my firearm: "When you woke up, you literally told me seven times that you were carrying concealed and that I needed to secure your firearm. I knew your head was pretty messed up since you couldn't remember talking to me about this after just a few minutes." I wasn't physically able to remove my firearm. The police officer removed it for me. All I had to do to get my firearm back was to make an appointment at the police department that served the city where the accident occurred. Simple process. The "always be sure to notify law enforcement when carrying concealed" part of my concealed carry training must be deeply engrained into my brain. :)

When they arrived they made me stay outside while they went in to "clear" the house. While inside they "searched" and found my firearm that was hidden. Subsequently they asked about it and I told them it was mine. I provided proof of purchase as well as my legal permit. The on-site officer in charge said they would return it following a forensic examination. However after it cleared national forensics and not involved in any crimes it was sent to the property clerks office. They refused to release it to me because I didn't meet the criteria for gun ownership in the state of Maryland although I do as far as the state of Virginia is concerned. I'm retired on a small fixed income and cannot afford an attorney. I even suggested that they ship it to a authorized Firearms agent in my state and I'd pay for shipping, all to no avail.

Since it was in a good kydex holster, he just helped take the entire holster out of the inside of my pants, and handed it off to my mother when she arrived. He asked if he could run it through to see if it was stolen, yada yada, and I jjust asked that he didn't. Nothing to hide, just don't like people running my stuff, and he completely understood. If you are transported by ambulance and are able to speak, inform the paramedics. If you're transported by ride share, inform staff when you arrive. Chances are when paramedics find it, they will secure it and turn it over to the police. VA Hospital rules specifically address this issue as an exception to 18 USC 930. If you're transported to a VA hospital and have your carry pistol, VA police are instructed to remove and secure it, but you *will not* be charged with a crime. Precisely there really isnt a reason to involve Law enforcement and let them sniff you out simply because youre exercising your Constitutional rights. They can take it and return it easily. I think the advice of calling the police ultimately comes from how they do things by the books to prevent any danger of a loose canon to medical staff. I get the safety issue but if you can call a family member and have them meet you at the hospital or the scene I see no reason to involve police be treated like a potential criminal and have your accident treated as Crime scene simply because you opted to carry that day... Or pay citations and fees before having your property returned.

EMT here. I've ran into this with my patients quite a few times. If they're unconscious, no big deal. If cops are there, I tell them and that's it. If they aren't, I remove the holster if possible, otherwise I cut the belt. If they're conscious, again, no big deal. Cops will handle it, but if they aren't there I typically stand on their non dominate side within arms reach and have them remove the holster and specify to not remove the firearm. I secure it in the locked ambulance narcotics drawer and have law enforcement meet us on scene or at the hospital. If I'm in a more sketchy situation and see the firearm, we swiftly exit the scene and wait down the road in the ambulance until law enforcement arrives. I have no way of defending myself and my safety is top priority. I also want to note that I take a picture of the firearms serial number and during my patient care report I annotate all firearm details. If law enforcement takes it, I have them sign my patient report as well. Always cover your ass.

More people need to ignore these unconstitutional laws and do what is right and not what you are told. The common criminal even after shooting at someone will get a simple slap on the wrest. Just go to any criminal court and sit and listen and you will see. It is sickening. I am licensed to carry in most of the 50 states because I want to follow the law but to pay and ask someone permission to exercise a civil right is completely ignorant and we should not have to pay for someone else that breaks the law and kills someone.

Several of the major hospitals have security with locked boxes.

Ok , I work for a major medical company in my area, 9 hospitals , I work security services .if an armed patient comes in we ask the patient to make the fire arm safe if able. Then we unload it inventory it in front of the patient place it in a sealed pouch and place it in the safe , then when they are discharged we return the firearm to the patient along with their receipt. Most hospitals even with the no carry permitted policy understand that these things happen and have some sort of safe for these items.

Here in Maine we have permitless carry, it is a class C felony if we don't tell EMS or police that we are carrying if we are able to do so. But the funny thing is, if we have a carry permit, we aren't required to inform them that we are carrying.

In a gun friendly state it’s not a big deal. I was in a car wreck and had to be taken to the ER. My wife had arrived on the scene, and the responding officer took control of my gun, and put it in my wife’s car.

When placing my weapon onto myself I always point it in a safe direction, chamber a round, turn off the safety as I’m placing it in the kydex holster. I then insert it, the holster, into the IWB location. Removing it is similar with the exception of pulling it about an inch so I can engage the safety and replace it back in. Anything to protect the trigger. I even store the weapon with it in the holster. Primary concern is trigger protection.

Paramedic Here, this video is very accurate but as to EMS handling a firearm we generally don’t do it even if we are trained and familiar with the procedures. It can potentially delay care if I try to secure a firearm. Not to mention the possibility for negligent discharges that could cause injury to responding personnel or bystanders, it’s much easier to have le secure any weapons we find.

Responded to calls like this. As Incident Commander 1st on scene, I have to insure the scene is safe and secure. Once it is discovered or victim reveals he has a firearm, I call it in immediately with my assessment. Protocol is wait for Sheriff’s to arrive and secure weapon, we are not trained to disarm anyone. We are there to lock and load get victim to ER. This poses and escalates the call, and delays transport. Good info you put out there. Normally when we arrived , officers there, not always the case.

I had a motorcycle crash six years ago and had a concealed handgun on my person. I alerted the first responders and they held it at a local police station while I was in the hospital (they did give me a receipt). They were grateful that I had alerted them, and the process was no hassle at all. So long as we act reasonably and responsibly, things like this usually go smoothly.

This happened during my ride along hours of my emt cert. FBI agent on the way to a press conference for a weird family murder via shotgun. The agent tried to merge at the last second, and rolled his car. I was being messed with by my fto repeatedly during that shift including false calls. 🙃 so I thought they were messing with me until I jumped out of the ambulance and we were in the middle of the freeway. He gave me the 411, but because i was a young newb nobody listened to me, then plop. The gun fell to the floor of the vehicle. The cops and ff freaked out then looked at me and I sorta shrugged lol. They had me do his vitals in the back on the way back. Was a rad experience. Thank you first responders for you service.

I am a national registered EMT On several occasions I have requested PD to scene to take possession of a firearm on unresponsive patient or motor vehicle accident. I have put it in our narc box if they weren’t available for security. We have a decent sheriff dept. and local PD’s most of them lock it in the trunk and leave their cards with the patient and have them call them when they’re out of ER and they meet them to give it back. We’re all 2A folks in my part of Indiana.

The only person who answered my call for help & to take custody of my firearm was my ultraliberal hoplophobic sister. When she got it from the police officer, she held it between her thumb & forefinger like a soiled diaper. The cop, EMTs & I were all laughing & my sister was snarling that"I should throw this in the river!" I stopped laughing & told the officers that I might need to file a stolen firearms report. He suggested that my sister take the gun to our parents' house ASAP & leave it unloaded.

I was on a trip to do some training with my brother out of town. I had to stop and get a motel on my way home, when I had a medical emergency so I called law enforcement to take my guns into the station for safe keeping, because I didn't want to leave them in the car until I got out of the hospital. I was told that I could come to the station to pick them up when I was feeling better. Everything that I have is legitimate, legal, and in my name. It took months and hundreds of dollars to get my legally owned property returned to me. Stuff happens.

In an effort to reduce a negligent discharge, I prefer belt holsters that don't require a belt to be removed. A paddle holster has been doing well for me with my SP101. The holster that came with my P238 has also served well.

I work as a security supervisor for a healthcare organization. Most of the time the police or EMT crew will let us know that there is a firearm. Security will either try to get it taken home by a family member, or we can secure it in our safe. Granted, each org. might do it a bit different, but that's how we handle it. It's usually pretty simple for the owner.

I was rear-ended by someone going highway speeds so needless to say I was hurting very badly. Fire department was the first on scene. The immediately started going to work to get me out of the truck. I told them I am carrying and need the deputy to come see me the second he gets on scene. The deputy arrived a few minutes later. I told the deputy I was armed and where I had it. I was shaking badly so the deputy had fire cut my belt and holster came free. Deputy said he would come find me later and I was carted off to the ER. An hour or so later the deputy showed up with my backpack which he put some items from my truck as well as my holstered handgun. He said the only way he could bring it into the hospital was unloaded and he has to keep the ammo. I believe he did me a huge favor by bringing it to me rather than trying to chase it down.

Great video and information but you're about 10 days too late. Last week while at work I had to call an ambulance for a heart attack, I was awake, conscious and worried about what to do with my weapon. Someone was coming to get the vehicle that I was driving but I did not know when. I let my EMT know that I was legally carrying a weapon and he told me they'll take care of it at the hospital because he did not want to wait with my transportation to the hospital. As they were checking me in and stripping me at the hospital, I removed my weapon, dropped the mag and cleared the weapon after letting the people know that I have a weapon on my person, the ER tech's response was great, they called security to store and secure my weapon on premises, I picked it up as I was discharged after showing ID. I'm not saying this is the right thing but all things considered I think it went very well. And yes, it did give me a whole different aspect of looking at things when carrying. Thanks again for your videos I learn something with every one of them. Since I'm on here commenting I will also tell you that not only those of you that carry a weapon but those of you that own a weapon, the first thing you should do once you purchase that weapon is join the USCCA, you will not regret it. GOD BLESS YOU ALL AND HAVE A MERRY CHRISTMAS.
