There’s literally been nothing like this before in our country. We all knew the threats of Trump this time around, and many still voted for him because they hate the system and they wanted to look people like us in the face and say “Fu*% You!!” It’s so cruel and thoughtless it’s hard to believe it’s even real

Whenever you learn about any era of history and think "how could they do this?", or "how stupid were those people?", you're missing something important. It's not like those questions have obvious answers, but you cannot understand history without empathizing with those who experienced it.

The vote came down to two things: The state of the economy and the Isreal genocide in Gaza. The Dems are fully complicit in the genocide and gave no direct plan of action on the economy so they lost. It's the same story as 2016... Trump is awful but the Dems would rather lose to him that give working class Americans a Godamned thing.

To be fair, we wouldn’t repeat that vote. If offered a second referendum, polls (far more accurate here than in America) suggest we might even rejoin. Brexit was terrible economically, but in a way it had a bright side it caused the far right here to burn out a bit earlier. Reform have nothing close to the momentum other far right parties do (and aren’t quite as bad- while still awful they are far better than the AFD for instance), and polls suggest they seem to have peaked

Sorry Steve, I dont think there is an arc of the universe...its more like a piece of spaghetti. We get to call it an arc when we live in countries that have not yet been annihilated through injustice. BUT. Hopelessness is not a reason to stop fighting. Or to keep highlighting the oppressors bullshit and denying them a clean victory. We can hold on out of spite to show them we are still here and to refuse to give in to them. The possibility of victory should not be the reason we fight for what is right. The fact that its right should be the reason. We are still here and we will not stop.

Fundamentally, it's about status. There is a large number of people (not a majority, but enough to decide an election if they're united and everyone else is not) who place great value on status. More than on wellbeing, more than on freedom, more than on being right and being moral (though they do tend to value being seen as right and moral), more than on ties with family and friends. But what does such a person do when they don't have wealth or power or expertise? They latch onto the one status they have, that they've been told over and over again throughout their life is very valuable: their nationality. If they feel the nation is powerful and respected, and therefore them as well, they're content and just obnoxious more than anything else. But if they don't feel that way, they're going to want that to change. So on the one hand, they have the choice of this openly chauvinistic guy who says he's going to "make America great again", make things easier for people of high status, make it harder to become an American (adding to the cachet), make the US less dependent on other countries and have it do whatever it wants on the international stage. On the other hand, the other side includes people who don't respect power or wealth, and worse, want to reduce or even eliminate concentrations of power and wealth. They also don't think of anyone as special because of their nationality. They want it to be easier to become an American and they prefer multilateral ties with the rest of the world. From the perspective of a status-seeker, which choice makes the most sense?

This result is a death sentence for me. Literally. I'm disabled, with a rare and incurable autoimmune disease. I require treatments of IVIG every two weeks, on top of the various medications I take daily. I require Celiac Plexus Nerve Block treatments every 8 weeks or so to tamp down the worst of the nerve damage pain. I am on Social Security for my income. When those are cut, I lose my home, and then die in 6-8 weeks trapped in my failing body while agony rips apart my mind from the inside. I will be dead long before my heart actually stops. And even if he somehow doesn't kill Social Security and Medicaid, the rest of the Project 2025 stuff makes my very existence illegal. Being trans is now "pornography", and being trans in a way that any minor can find out I exist (such as going outside to the grocery store) is "child molestation". I'll be in a Federal prison before I even have to worry about housing or health care, and it's not like they're going to give me proper treatment there, so again, I die. The thin rays of hope, that absentee ballots are going to flip red states after all and the victory was declared prematurely, or that there is actually wide-spread corruption and illegal activities that can be found and corrected in time? They might as well not exist, they're too slim. If it was a question of absentee ballots, there wouldn't be this level of certainty in the announcements. And the justice system moves so glacially slow that Trump didn't even get in actual trouble for inciting a violent insurrection on the nation's Capitol four years ago, so finding and fixing something in the next couple of months isn't going to happen. I am going to die. And this country will cheer. The Redcaps will get to soak their hats in my blood, like they want.

A second time, and a popular vote means it wasn't a mistake, it's what was desired. They saw a conman, rapist, sellout, and bigot and made him into a religious figurehead for a cult. Where can you even go from there?. Climate disaster is basically a done deal now with the long lasting effects this will incur, the economy is fucked, and fascism is being glorified openly in the West. Russia could not be happier. This needs to be a meaningful reflection point for people across the West. I fear for America that this was the Rubicon. A step too far that has set new norms. Of all the quotes - even the Sinclair Lewis one about fascism, this ONE you've shared has struck me as the most apropos to where our civilization is today. Too many people understand full well that they've been supporting the election of a criminal who led an insurrection against his own gov't, who has promised to eliminate our Constitution and destroy Democracy in the USA and WANT it to be that way. They are suffering and they will soon suffer a whole lot more BUT they will go on blaming people who have nothing to do with their pain. Is there a way to fight that? Yes. But it will mean admitting that it exists and must be resisted. I doubt that will occur anytime soon.

We voted for a black man 16 years ago and then we did it again. I don’t think it has to do with being black. I think we’re past that. I think it has a lot more to do with being a woman and the false narrative about the economy. Ask the average voter and they point to economic worries. Ask the average conservative about generic women leaders and they don’t think women are leaderly. Combine your bias against women being leaders, with fear for your livelihood, and I think the recipe sells itself; at that point you’re probably willing to ignore all the flashing red signs.

Another thing: in 9 out of 10 states where the ballot included voter initiatives to enshrine abortion rights into state law, woman's rights won. The cancer isn't just the Republican party, it's Democratic leadership not understanding their own voters. But people aren't as bigoted as it appears. Ignorant, yes. Unwilling to fight against voter suppression, perhaps. Unwilling to get rid of an election system that inherently disenfranchises voters who happen to live in the wrong state, yes. If we want to pick up the pieces, we might have to start locally, or at the state level. The majority of state governors are Republican. This should be a sign of where to start. This is part of why people vote for Republican presidential candidates. They are often former governors who are perceived as having experience. Maine was also the only state to have a voter initiative putting election financing reform on the ballot. It won. That's a good thing. It needs to be on the ballot in more states next time if Maine's hope of getting the issue to the supreme court and setting a precedent that makes it law everywhere doesn't pan out. It's easy to forget that there's more to political action than getting fixated on the federal government. It sucks that it has so much power, but even then the source of power in a democracy is the voting public. The game feels rigged at the federal level because it is by virtue of being a Republic. But playing that game isn't the only plan of attack.

Yes, this is who we are. Many of us grew up believing that we're the "greatest nation in the world." That moniker is not just untrue. It's a cruel joke. The stats show that we're the worst nation in the developed world. Our health care delivery is terrible, our poverty level is awful, and our education system is hodge podge. We have the most military might, whoopee. We're the opposite of that moniker. We're the worst nation in the developed world. You can find worse ones if you look at the third world and despot regimes. Honduras, Iran, and North Korea are worse than here, but that's a very low bar. Any nation that's developed is beating us statistically, especially in the area of gun deaths and access to health care. The United States is a rogue nation, and we're that way thanks to the mean-spirited and hateful attitude of the sick losers who support Trump.

What upsets me the most is not just that he won, but that he won WAY better than he did in 2016. Back then, we had the excuse that he was an unknown factor. We knew he was a clown, we knew he was unsuited for leadership, but we were blissfully unaware of just what a demonstrably existencial threat to democracy he was. This time? This time we knew, we knew what he's capable of, we knew what he tried to do, what he did, what he continues to do, what he's threatened to do. And armed with that knowledge, not only he won, but won by an even bigger margin than in 2016. This time, no electoral college saved his ass, he got both the popular vote, and the electoral college vote. Which means a majority of Americans took a look at stuff like January 6, and said "Yeah, I want more of that." God help us all.

You took the words from my mouth. I thought Obama was a change. That we made progress. When he was elected, I was an independent that didn’t believe in affirmative action because it showed how even African Americans can be equal now and we’ve moved past that… Thankfully, my friend (to this day) showed me the errors of my ways and now, more than 10 years later, it shows that it was right to change my mind. We haven’t changed as a country. We haven’t made progress. His election just revealed the ugly truth: our country is a greedy, racist, xenophobic mess that would bend to any autocrat if “my eggs were $2 instead of $6!” And like you said… we have a lot more work to do. Progress to actually be made. The civil right era isn’t “over”. It’s been going. The George Floyd protests proved we aren’t done. And the white nationalists in Charlottesville Virginia did too.

This nation has a long history of declaring victory over it's issues after only taking the first step to address it then turning around and telling the people who fought for that step. Well we did this here isn't it enough. I'll remind our native American population are still having to fight to resolve some basic issues. So as soon as we went from an aging man to a woman of mixed race I knew almost all of trumps disqualifying traits went out the window. So much that we literally just replaced one of the most accomplished administrations in decades with the leader of the most incompetent ever. As a black man loving this country has always taken some work I doubt after 42 years if I have the energy for it much longer. I wasn't surprised by what happened I was just disappointed in some of the people that helped it happen. Maybe before I've breathed my last we as a nation can take those honest first steps. Unfortunately I believe the issue will be forced on us before any of us are ready for it due to the results of this election.

The cognitive dissonance! I'm a Texan currently living in Scotland. Spent the entire day today at the shop having work done on my motorcycle. Upon hearing my accent and finding out I'm from Texas, they all wanted to talk about Him. I am so fekkin drained. Drained from the disappointment I feel in the U.S. as a nation. Drained from the embarrassment of being an American and the fact that He now represents me on the world stage. Drained because His actions, yet again, reflect upon me as an unwitting representative of American culture. Drained that so many registered Dems stayed home (Because nationally, registered Dem voters outnumber GOP/MAGA and if every registered voter turned out to the polls the GOP would never take the Whitehouse) Drained from folks on both sides of the pond trying to tell me to "Just ignore it" as He doesn't affect me being as I live in Scotland. Yes, I do live in Scotland. Also, My son, daughter-in-law, and granddaughter live in the States. My and my partner's entire families live in the States. All of my nephews, and nieces live in the States, including my queer niece and her wife. Drained because my country chose, willing chose fascism, again. There was a seemingly endless stream of white guys at the shop today trying to tell me how He may be a shit person, but actually He is good for America, and foreign policy. These are the same folks who whinge about how wrecked things are here in the U.K. ... under Labour, without a single shred of comprehension that we are coming out of 12 years of Tories ( British Conservative party) stripping the country for parts dragging us out of the E.U. The cognitive dissonance Unlike living back in Texas where I just avoided conservative f*ktards, here I can't avoid American politics. Because the moment they hear my accent, everyone wants to talk about it. Because I'm a 6'3 tall Texan with a deep southern drawl and a John Wayne swagger they just assume that I too must be a conservative f*ktard. I. Am. Exhausted.
