London-born artist and fashion photographer Miles Aldridge reflects on a career spent bringing colour-and uncanniness-to the world of fashion in this new episode of Photographers in Focus. Starting out working for Teen Vogue, W, and Harper’s Bazaar, the boundary-pushing artist has long focused on how color can be used as a vibrant, rather than a simply naturalistic, medium. Aldrige has also approached photography as an abstract practice, famously composing an image of a stained cigarette stubbed into a fried egg for a lipstick campaign. His images can unsettle as much as they can bring pleasure, with the models he shoots often caught in beguiling poses, wearing unorthodox expressions. Beyond the world of fashion, he has shot many famous figures, including artist duo Gilbert & George and more recently the cast of Game of Thrones.

Definitely one of my fav fashion photographers along with Viviane Sassen and Solve Sundsbo. I think his images reflect something ultimately very natural and visceral. A rose is beautiful but has thorns. A bright blue frog whilst vibrant and eye catching is deadly. It makes me think of how everything, no matter how pretty or visually attractive have dark undercurrents. I like that there’sa hyper-realism to his work. Extreme versions of tableaux we would recognise but that are shown through a more polarising lens.

There is something troubling about this photographer. The pictures do _something_ , sure. Stir some feeling or reaction. But this film about this photographer and his ideas is unsettling. Is it the music?
