I think JOURNALISM is dead.... Especially here in The States.... It's sickening....

When you come across well researched, critically engaged journalism you realise just how dire the situation has become (or maybe always was). There are still great journalists out there, holding power to account : )

Hallo, I don't think so, here in Europe there is very good journalism in most countries, but we have to look for it, the same goes for music today, there are very talented musicians, you have to find them! I prefer to read both sides of an issue and form a personal opinion, that's what we learned in the 60s/70s school, best regards from Berlin😊

Hey I hate it too but imagine a state with no journalism. 1984 comes to mind. And for us to enter that dystopian state of control and safety, journalism is one of the first things the civilians will find themselves calling to rid

I must be a dying breed. I bought a new car in 2014 and was stunned to discover it came with a CD player and FM radio with AUX... outdated technology even then. And I've mysteriously lost or misplaced several car-stored CDs over the years so now I choose just one CD I want to listen to before leaving the house. I get to hear the entire album in rush hour traffic, sometimes twice, and have found a new appreciation for songs I never used to bother listening to. So far, no damaged CDs. As an aside, but in line with the topic, I recently noticed that FM tuner components are a lot harder to source if you want a match for your existing stereo system.

I notice that both Vinyls and CDs are selling well in record stores. Even the compact cassette is doing well. I just don't understand why the mainstream media hates cassettes and compact discs so much. Many people even use their discman players as car CD players! The Guardian man is totally deceived.

They want to discourage the people to buy cd's or digital downloads, because they can charge you only once for buying a cd or digital download. With streaming the labels got charged everytime you play the album. All money goes to labels and streaming services, the artist gets probably 1% at best 😂

Phil, thank you for setting the record straight, regarding the current state of the CD. Not in its heyday... BUT CERTAINLY NOT DEAD, EITHER! I get so annoyed every time I see articles similar to the one you're referencing. I own 2,200 CD's (probably a rather "small" collection, compared to what you and many of your readers/subscribers have) and am actually buying more now, more often, than at any point in time since December 1986 when I got my first Sanyo CD player. My biggest joy in life, these days, is acquiring all the out-of-print CD titles (on Ebay) that I missed out on when I was younger. I've got stacks and stacks of titles still waiting to be listened to (sound familiar to anyone?). It's a joy to be able to look at my apartment wall, with steel shelving, filled floor-to-ceiling, with alphabetized CD's. Certainly, to people like us... the CD format will never go away. And yeah... I so agree with you about not liking to play 'em in the car... never did. I was always much too OCD about the hairline (and sometimes, not so hairline) scratches that the slide-in CD mechanism caused. I'd have to purchase another copy of the CD if that happened... even if it still played okay. 😮 💿💿💿💿

@michaelmaurer6923
@michaelmaurer6923 5 күн бұрын
The CD players I had in cars put a specific pattern of hairline scratches on the outer perimeter of the discs. Certainly, so subtle that the majority of people wouldn't even consider 'em true scratches. But to someone with OCD, it bothers me. It's almost identical to the subtle scratch pattern that the Playstation sometimes puts on discs (near the outside edge only). Just saying what MY particular experience was. Obviously, it didn't happen to everyone. And there are surely others whom it did happen to... but they just never noticed. A combination of both. 💿

I really don’t know where Tim Dowling is getting his information. Over the last two years, I’ve purchased approximately 2000 CDs, both new and used. That number includes box sets. Every time I visit music and charity shops, they are always busy, and not only with old guys like me. There are always younger people who were born long after the heyday of the CD era.

CD dead? Well how come significant box sets of recent times (Bob Dylan's 1974 concerts, Bowie's Rock & Roll Star and Conversation Piece sets, to name but three) are fundamentally CD based? And just how many classical releases - especially box sets - are sold in formats other than CD or SACD? I've been reading these "CD is dead" headlines ever since Linn stopped making CD players back in 2007, some 17 years ago and, guess what, they're still around (as is my ageing Linn CD12 for that matter). And while new release CDs retail for a third of their (often unreliable) vinyl equivalents, I'll continue buying most of them on CD, fond as I remain of vinyl.

I have no problems with any physical format. Actually, I love it. I've been buying it for years and hope to keep buying it years to come. I prefer cds over any other format due to space saving size. I also like the fact that I can listen to them at any time without the internet, which I am experiencing at the moment due to the recent hurricane in NC. I'm on the side of the CD. I was a bit late to them, while I struggled with the death of records...years later, (although obviously, records didn't die either) I much prefer CDs and it pisses me off when record companies release records with no CD counterpart, like, for instance, on Record Store Day...and elsewhere. I still miss lyric sheets I can read, though. And I'm not hip on the latest price hikes for CDs, but I haven't heard a scratch or a warp for many years!

Hi Phil, I agree with everything that you have said, I can remember back around 87 - 88, I read an article in a Magazine, about HI FI/CD Technology, I can't remember who wrote the article, but they predicted the death of the Vinyl LP by 1993!! I burst out laughing at the time, because I knew that this was just nonsense. Whenever people make these predictions, they never happen. I love buying music, and supporting the Artist, as I want to own the item, and read about the recording of the album in question. There will always be a market for physical product, because that is what people want. I understand that not everyone is going to buy a CD or a Record, they would rather get it by other means, and that's fine. Critic's need to understand, that collector's will always want to own physical media, it is the same with Books, or whatever people collect.

I play CDs in my car. It is one of my joys when driving. (Granted I don't drive a lot, but that's beside the point. That said, it's a 55 reg, low mileage and garaged every night.) I use copies of my original CDs so there's no risk to that disk. When I got the car it was at a time when I couldn't play CDs much in the house, so my work journeys rejuvenated my listening, giving a proper chance to hear albums I had awaiting. If ever need to get a new vehicle, if built-in CDs are missing, I will get an external player that can plug into the system. The physical media is too important to me and I don't like streaming services limiting my audio choices.. Besides, I need to play the CDs from my own band!

Bought one of the very first cd players when they were introduced in the early 80's from a school friend whose family owned a hifi shop and chose Tubular Bells as my first disc from the handful of titles that were at the time available to purchase. In answer to your point about in-car CD players, my car is one from 2016 that I have had from new and it has a CD player in it (as well as Bluetooth connectivity) but I think I've used the CD player about half a dozen to a dozen times in those eight years - and usually only because if I've been out and purchased a CD in a music or charity shop, then I may have stuck it in for the drive on the way home just to give it an "anticipatory" spin. Here's why CDs and physical media is better than streaming media: 1. The artist gets more money from physical media - they can control their own catalogue or get the record company to do it WITHOUT the additional streaming "middle man" of iTunes or Spotify. 2. Streaming media sites have no long term guarantee of availability - some very big media companies are failing currently, particularly in the PC gaming sector. No company is too big to fail, but with physical media it is yours forever. 3. I play my CDs rarely because I rip them to my music server in lossless FLAC format the moment that I get them - then I can play them on good hifi as they are, or compress them to lossier MP3 format so I can fit more albums on mobile devices. My CDs are their own backups and I can choose how I want to enjoy my digital music. 4. Putting my hand into my pocket and buying an album makes me appreciate it more and WANT to "get my money's worth" from it. If I've paid £10 (or even a bit more) to enjoy a great album over and over again for 40 or 50 years, that is always great value for money. 5. I am a complete "music snob" (I suspect like most people here) and music is too precious to me to treat like "Pick 'n' Mix sweeties". For the majority of the time, I listen to complete albums and, once or twice a week, I sit down on the sofa, stick a classic album on the hifi and DO NOTHING ELSE but listen to it (maybe with a beer or coffee, and the sleeve notes on my lap). If I am in the car with the missus, or out for a walk on my own, I may compile a list of tracks to play. But picking favourite tracks on iTunes or Spotify is not appreciating music. 6. Some years ago, I was doing a technical training course for some youngsters. We got onto the topic of music and they were quite shocked to learn that I was still buying CDs. One response I got was "I don't buy CDs because there's only ever one or two good tracks on them, the rest is filler". My response was "If that's the case, then you're just not listening to the right artists. If the artists you listen to can't produce engaging music for an entire album length, even if in that album there are "highs and lows", then that's on them as the musicians to do better".

Interesting to note that many corporate UK charity shops have started to ditch CD's, and are not replenishing their stock. Some second hand vinyl re-sellers now have good collections of second hand CD's, so the market has really just switched to WHERE you can purchase them from. Large corporations don't like niche markets, they have no interest in 'us' - they are more than happy to see fake stories about dead music formats, because it suits their narrative.

It's also why I still buy Blu -rays and DVD's and they are also still selling, if you go by the trade my local CEX store does whenever I've been in there, people are literally buying stacks of movies and music. I think it's good and healthy to have as many ways to buy, listen and enjoy your music/movies as you wish. It gives the consumer a far better choice for their money..

Great video Phil. The CD isn't dead in my household. I'm like you, a physical media owner. I own a CD player and I think I'm on my 3rd one. I've also played them in my DVD & Bluray players. I own over 2500 CD's. Maybe I have a similar number in vinyl LP's too and around 4300 singles & EP's. I hardly buy 'new' released music in either format, mostly used and only what catches my eye, unless I go down a 'rabbit hole' lol. People have given me their CD & record collections to go the streaming route. A few years back I reverted to segregating my music system from my surround system so now they're 2 distinct entities. I also only stream music, via Android Auto, in my car which I upgraded last December. Unlike my previous vehicle, it doesn't have a CD player, however I hardly used that anyway. I did at one point play 'burnt' discs in it but didn't want to play my originals, except maybe when I had just bought one and played it going home from the music store or whoever I bought it from. I'd resisted music streaming services like Spotify & Amazon Music for a long time, however it's now part of my life, though the experience isn't totally satisfying. It's frustrating when you don't get the exact track you ask for (a live version instead of the studio one for example 🙄). I play music when I want to, though not all the time. It's there if I need it or am in that mood for it. Cheers mate. 👍

You might find this funny. I am first and foremost a vinyl (and reel) guy, but I must have a CD player in my car. The one in my previous car failed, and I insisted on replacing it even though the car was at over 300,000 miles. I did end up moving onto another car not long after, but I made sure my current one had at least a single-disc player. I love picking up CDs and keeping a stack going in the car at all times. Yes, fumbling with them is a pain, but having a physical album in the car better helps me appreciate it as a work of art than pulling it up on the iPhone does. So obviously a very different perspective on my end, but my point is that the CD is alive and well in my car. I also prefer CDs for pretty much every album from the 90s and on, as they were conceived for the format. Although I guess that's not always true for modern albums, haha.

Physical form of music will never die so long as there’s people who want it. I like most also stream music to discover bands I’ve never heard before. I’ll always buy cds and vinyl records just to sit back with a beer, read through the lyrics or information that comes with the album while enjoying it to the fullest (usually at vol.11 😂)!

Spot on. In the car I've been streaming via Bluetooth from 'MP3s' on my phone for years. Those 'MP3's' are ripped from physical media, I own and have tagged in the specific way that I want. I have all of my physical collection ripped to a NAS drive and curated using PLex. I then have Plex on my TV/Soundbar, my PC and my mobile phone. Like you I stream music from a provider (Spotify) to check out new stuff. I also occasionally play a CD on a CD player.

I do not know where these people get this all from as there is still such a high demand for physical music. I have a record player and several CD players dotted around the house and find it more convenient to stream music in the car. I just love having physical music whether it is vinyl or CD.

Still listen to cds in my car and they sound fantastic. And yes, I have a cabinet with a cd player and amp, and yes, also have a portable dvd / cd player which I plug to my laptop and then to headphones and they sound fantastic ! Read that article last week, lame, I thought, written by someone who does not love music. I also stream a lot, by the way.

My old car still has a CD player, and I’ve never had a CD get trapped in it, has always worked fine. I did have to purchase an external CD drive for my laptop so I can rip the albums I purchase and upload the tracks to my MP3 player. I don’t ever stream music on my smartphone, happy with the MP3 player. The only time I ever stream is on the laptop and that is just checking things out. Unsurprisingly I have both a CD player and a turntable in the house for playing music on. I have though abandoned tapes, and I don’t ever see myself owning a cassette player again.

Hello Phil. I'm 25 and I've been collecting CD's since I was about 14. I soon then started collecting Vinyl when I got my first job. These days it's more about where I'm at in my financial situation that makes think whether or not to buy the CD or Vinyl version of an album that I'd like to get. Interesting video. Enjoyed as always. - Dylan

To be fair, there's also been a handful of articles in the Guardian questioning the assumed demise of the CD - backed up by dozens of Cif posters saying how much they love CDs. The rise and rise of vinyl has triggered some conflicted responses in my music loving little brain. 1) I can't help thinking about the "Man in The White Suit" syndrome and the money worshipping "media" conglomerates. 2) Although you and I are of a similar age, I'm sceptical of our peers flooding KZbin with their tales of prog rock vinyl etc. My observation is that a generation of black t-shirt oldies are desperately trying to buy back their once cool "muso status" from the 1970s (and usually failing!). Not to put too fine a point on it - these guys are ever so slightly boring. 3) I well remember the success of the CD format in the late 80s and what a breath of fresh air it was to have a more stable, defect free format to enjoy. Remember the joy of making cassettes from CDs? They sounded so much better! 4) For those of us that really love music, who love to explore, there's never been a better time to search out obscure but wonderful CDs - world music, classical, modern electronica etc etc. My mantra is: it's not about the format, it's about the music.

What a load of balls from that columnist. It sounds to me he does not like music otherwise he would have a CD player or even a turntable with amplifier etc. The only time I use my laptop for music is to convert a CD into an MP3 for my hard drive or for my portable MP3 player.

Hi Phil - nice response to that useless article. I do have a CD player in my car, I always have lol. But - I dont use it because when you go over bumps - what happens??? The music skips and I hate that, and of course the CD ends up being scratched - and I wont have that. I had a sound system installed in my car after I bought it - (second hand car). My wife wanted a reversing camera, and I wanted a decent sound system - so, we found a unit that has both. So - I've dumped several dozen CD's onto a simple memory stick and I play that through my car sound system - perfect. It does have, amongst other things a CD player, but as I mentioned previously I just dont use it. Cya Doug PS On my computer I have an external CD/DVD player which works jolly well 🙂

Here too, thousands of cd's - sacd - blu-ray audio - a bunch of records. And I'm quite sure my streaming setup will be superior to Tim from the Guardian's setup. All my lossless cd-rips + qobuz and bandcamp downloads are on various servers and harddrives (as backup). With Roon ARC and iBroadcast I can stream and download my collection everywhere in the world. The only place where the cd player is obsolete is in the car 😅 BTW, I really dig that album from Blossoms, purchased the 2 cd deluxe + covers cd from Townsend, after streaming various times and purchasing the digital hi-res files from Qobuz.

I really hope they are wrong but I'm not sure. CD is the only digital medium uncumbered by DRM left and the industry HATES that. I think they will kill it as soon as they can, not because the lack of sales but because, without DRM, they have no control over it.

i have bought more Cds in the last year than in the 10 previous years. Streaming is cool, but I found that there was so much music available I ended up just browsing through hundreds of albums without actually focusing on anything. Putting a CD into the player or a record on the platter makes you commit to it. Physical format rules.

I would not trust anything published by the Guardian. Clickbate indeed! I love physical media, especially CD. There is nothing better than putting that album on and reading the lyrics and having that tangible product there. My daughter who is 16, has started to seriously collect music and guess what format she is buying? You guessed it.... CD. Keep doing what you are doing Phil. Support the artists and buy physical!!!!

I couldn't agree more Phil. Just another lazy article reinforcing bias and based on zero fact/data to support it. It gets my hackles up when I read an article or hear someone start off with the grand statement "everybody" or "no-one". You hit the nail firmly on the head- many people live quite happily in multi format universe. They have invested time and money over the years building their music collection on vinyl/cd and bought equipment for the job of playing that collection. Yes there are always those who for some weird reason have to adhere to their chosen tribe and are 100% all in on a single format be it vinyl/cd or streaming and they denigrate those not in their tribe at any opportunity. Thankfully they are in the minority. We saw how many ditched vinyl when CDs came along and then spent a small fortune when the "vinyl revival" kicked in as they replaced their cd collection with vinyl. Like you I stream in the car and on the go and at home I use streaming to search out "new" music and artists before buying their physical album. My main preference is CD/SACD and very occasionally vinyl (when I can be bothered with all the faff and rituals involved). Articles like the one you quote often have an agenda and are designed to provoke debate and act as click bait. The poor journalist has to find his 500 words somewhere for the weekly column...

Hi Phil, I think the problem can be as in this case with the writer who no longer has a CD player in his car or maybe even at home that he thinks everyone else is in the same boat. As you point out by doing the proper research the CD is still alive & kicking. I for one am still buying CDs & the odd vinyl & will continue to do so. I have an older car so I still have a CD player in it but I use either burnt CDs or copies I have acquired through op shops. These aren't my prized copies so the odd scratch doesn't matter. I do some streaming as well but I prefer using my own database which I've loaded onto my iPods so I have an endless supply of the music I love with no advertising. I might be a bit weird but I have some form of music player in every room of the house including the garage. These range from a comprehensive stereo with amp, turntable & yes CD player to a 3 in 1 or just a JBL charge 5 in my little computer room. I must say this is a very fulfilling way to hear my music. Cheers Laurie 🙂
