Fan bloody tastic!! One of my favourites. I have the Acrobat vinyl and several different CD versions, including the Japanese album. Saw them on the same tour, got to meet them all and get autographs. Been a massive fan of Ian ever since. He was so down to earth and great to chat with. I named my eldest son Ian, after him, who’ll be 40 in July! Mr Universe is a timeless album I still play regularly. 👍👍🤘

One of my first concerts was seeing Gillan live at the Rainbow March 1980 when Ritchie Blackmore joined them on stage

Hi Robert, thank you for watching. That must have been amazing. I have seen photos from that gig but never met anyone who was there before. Phil

My absolute favorite of the GILLAN albums. This is the first time I had heard of Bernie Torme, and from this moment on, I was hooked! The title track is the standout for me from this lineup, and of course, "Fighting Man" from the previous lineup, is a masterpiece. This band had everything, it was PERFECT!

Thanks Shaun, it really is a classic, do you have the Japanese album from 1978?

@@NowSpinningMagazine No I don't, but funnily enough I've just been pricing it up on ebay. Is it worth purchasing? 👍

Thank you Phil! I 100% agree Mr Universe was Gillan at it’s finest hour.. I used to have it on cassette and the other side was the Tygers of Pantang Spellbound album.. I was 15 years old listening to this album in America..We we’re able to get it on import.. If I could jump into a Time Machine it would be to the Reading Festivals during the Torme era of the band to see first hand the magic of this classic lineup of phenomenal musicians..Thank you for your stories and passion..I love it as a fellow admirer of all Gillans works

@@NowSpinningMagazine My pleasure Phil, another great watch. I started late with Gillan, with Double Trouble, then onto Magic, and Glory Road. I also bought a Bernie Torme solo album...can't think what is was called now, but it was unique, and great !

Hi Jerry, thank you for watching. It turned out a bit longer than I had expected but once I started there was so much to cover. I should have made more of the track Fighting Man as this is classic Gillan. Best wishes - Phil :)

Marvelous again Phil. Right in your wheelhouse this one. Your passion for the music oozes from every pore. Loved the stories. Many thanks. I always got the feeling that IG had a ball making this music.

Hi Chris, thank you for watching. Sometimes doing a video like this on a album you really love is harder to do. The problem is trying to keep it a sensible length and worrying you might miss something out! Phil :)

I won a Radio Tees signed LP in a competition. Stupidly I sold it. I do prefer the Japanese album though. I saw Gillan at Redcar Coatham Bowl with the Steve Byrd line-up. A brilliant gig. The stage was only about 2 feet high and I was right at the front. Dry Ice everywhere. It took two songs before the dry ice cleared. Amazing. My first ever gig was the IGB Clear Air Turbulence tour in 1977. I saw them with Bernie Torme a few times too. I got support act Randy California's plectrum and he signed my Mr Universe programme too. I love Spirit so that was a nice bonus🙂

Glory road was my first introduction to solo Gillan,I remember trying to win it in Sheffield star or some local paper when I was younger,then I didn't really take much notice after that..about a year ago I downloaded most if not all of his catalogue that was on iTunes, including a plethora of live stuff.Mr universe seemed to be the one people were talking most about,and I found a 2nd hand copy a few years ago..as usual Phil ...I now need to listen to it again 🤟🤟

Hi John, I hope you enjoy giving Mr Universe a revisit! It is rough and ready but captures the ethos of the band perfectly. Fighting Man is one of Gillans finest moments - Phil :)

I've never understood box sets that have the album twice. You want either the vinyl or the CD not both.
@NowSpinningMagazine3 жыл бұрын
I agree, many of the reviews I do where I have is because I bought the vinyl first then bought the Cd later on. There are some bands (Deep Purple is an example) where I will get both formats if they come with tracks not available elsewhere. Mostly I will go for the CD. Phil :)

I bought (and still have) the album soon after seeing them at Reading 1979. What a great performance that was and they did Child In Time as an encore. I was surprised to see the original album had a picture inner sleeve as my Acrobat copy doesn't have one - boo hoo. I also have the same Gillan tour programme as you do (and the Glory Road prog).
