I don’t watch this show but bobby actually seems like a really supportive character. I love that he didn’t try to do something super masculine with him (like a sports game) and got Beyoncé tickets as a way to appeal to Justin’s actual interests

eldadevata EXACTLY! I absolutely hate this kind of representation. Justin is a really cool character and all but they could have handled it better
@thedarkestpath74644 жыл бұрын
eldadevata admittedly I don’t like the stereotypes either, but I don’t think the problem is the representation of feminine gay men, but rather the way they’re used as a punchline, something to laugh at. I think Glee was one show that handled it great, Kurt wasn’t just a walking talking stereotype, there as nothing more than a joke, he had real feelings and problems and a life. Their self expression is not “an act” to them, you only think that way because you don’t understand where they’re coming from. There was a scene where Finn asked Kurt why he can’t stop making a spectacle of himself, why he can’t just be normal for his own sake. Well, the fact of the matter is, that is his normal, it’s the way he feels most comfortable, how he feels most himself. There are gay people out there who would rather be ostracized, beaten or even killed than to pretend to be something their not, and I think it’s really disrespectful to say that it’s nothing more than “an act” just because they’re a minority within a minority. So no, the representation of feminine gay men is not the problem, the problem is the disrespectful and homophobic way they’ve been portrayed for so long.

I just want everyone in the comments who assumed Justin's sexuality and believes this isn't the type of representation we need today, to know that this is exactly the type of representation I needed ten years ago living in the rural Midwest as a young, closeted Latino gay boy with no one onscreen who resembled me or acted like me to begin with. Justin Suarez saved my life. Coming home to an unaccepting, intolerant family after being mercilessly bullied at school, I NEEDED to see a feminine brown boy be loved exactly for who he was and loved unconditionally by his mother. So in short, none of you know what you are talking about and you're all internally homophobic.
@spanishvideoclub49014 жыл бұрын
Actually the story with Justin was about him accepting himself. Even after having a boyfriend, he had too much shame to admit it. This is why it’s not a good idea to walk up to a gay guy and say “hey, we know you’re gay. Everyone knows you’re gay. There’s no reason to pretend.” If you do that, it’s the opposite of supportive. It would be considered as bullying because he himself was not ready to accept that fact. So instead of feeling supportive, he feels like he was being cornered.

I teared up a little bit watching this, and it's partially because I'm not doing well right now but also because Bobby was trying really hard and rather than forcing heteronormitive behavior on Justin he tried bonding over mutual interests like Beyonce(tho for different reasons), and I just wish my family would have tried like that for me

What I find strange about Justin is that he is not discriminated against (for the most part - as there is still rampant homophobia in Latino communities even today) for being gay, but that no one thinks his need for privacy is normal. Sex is a very private matter. It's not because he is being a difficult teen (Justin is a remarkable person), it's because he wants to keep his sex life private, and that is the normal reaction to an over protecting mother, and most of all a bumbling future step fater. Justin is a role model for good health and well being. Considering the social obstacles created by his heritage, Justin is a hero. Television needs more examples like him.

I don't watch this show, but if you're in the closet or hiding a relationship, why would you kiss someone right out in the open in front of your house??
@kevinh8115 жыл бұрын
I can answer this one. I didn't have a dramatic moment like this scene, but I did kiss a boy in the open while closeted. You do it because kissing someone you have feelings for is a normal thing to do. And sometimes you act on your feelings without thinking, especially when young. And then you freak out for a minute wondering if anyone saw. That's what I did anyways.

I LOVE Ugly Betty, and am all about gay representation. That being said, I HATE that they turned Justin into a quasi-bitchy queen. I wish/hope that there are more characters like Austin, who are not the stereotype. Honestly I don't see myself in Justin, I don't see myself in Kurt from Glee. Maybe younger guys do and good on them. But when I see gay characters literally playing a stereotype I disengage. Representation? I would love to see that for gays who don't scream "Girl!!!" who don't act like an exaggerated version of a woman.with crudeness and vulgarity. A sense of normalcy would be cool.
