In US news and current events today, meet Crystal Barnes - a lifelong resident of Winston-Salem, NC. Here's how a WAP program was able to radically change the burden of her electricity bills of a low-income household.
In 2019, she applied for a local Weatherization Assistance Program (WAP). Government-run WAPs are designed to help low income households save energy and money by improving their homes’ energy efficiency.
Through this program, contractors installed new appliances in Barnes' home that could better retain heat and conduct airflow. Her previous electricity bills were as high as $500 a month.
The average cost of home modifications covered by the program is $4,000. The average annual amount saved on energy bills in weatherized homes according to the US Dept. of Energy is $283.
The percentage of annual income spent on energy in low-income households, compared to 3.5% for other households. The median annual income of households in Forsyth County, NC where Carson lives is around $50,000.

I was approved and qualified. When it came time to come help us they said, sorry we ran out of money and don't do your area anymore. We ended up doing it ourselves. With the help of friends. Where does this money go? Not to help people in need that is for sure.

Hi, what kind of insulation do they use? My concern is that some of the insulation materials emit radon...

Not true, I'm a crew chief for a weatherization program. We use cellulose where I am. Radon is a naturally occurring substance that comes from the ground. We generally lay a vapor barrier down in crawlspaces to block it.

@@Oz123 I'm afraid I didn't clarify. Radon is emitted from the ground. Insulation doesn't emit radon.

The comments prove people lack basic moral standards, people shouldn’t be so poor their at risk of dying, Also we wouldn’t have to be taxed so high if BILLIONARES payed their taxes. So no don’t blame the single mother for feeding her children.
