Notice that Kathryn said '...the train was almost to Crockett before she stopped playing..' This is another piece of evidence that the Eastbound train, coming from Bristol and headed for Roanoke was the primary target for Link's photo and recording. Thank you Permaglo for putting this up. Mrs. Dotson tried for years to teach me to play piano, to no avail.

I have the album on vinyl. Whenever I play it, I crank the volume on the speakers, sit back and close my eyes. It is like I am carried back in time to when smoke belching giants ruled the rails. It sounds so nice in surround sound.

One week after the recording was made the line was converted from steam to diesel power.

good find- very interesting. I first heard the Rural Retreat recording on an LP in the mid 80's. i thought it very strange in a wonderful way- it took me many years to find it, and it's nice to hear Mrs Dodson's story. Thanks for letting us know that she only very recently passed away
