Oct. 27, 2017 | Felix Contreras -- Natalia Lafourcade is a successful singer-songwriter whose voice and music live on the edge of pop, but maintain a distinct independence.
A few years ago, while Lafourcade was traveling Brazil, she felt a great nostalgia for her native Mexico and its folk music. When she finally returned home, she immediately called some friends for the kind of party that is ubiquitous in Latin America: lots of social drinking, lots of food and lots of guitars and singing. Classic folk songs were on the playlist and a good time was had by all.
Someone recorded the informal jam session and Lafourcade's management team heard the tapes. "This is your next record!" they told her.
That record, Musas: Un Homenaje al Folclore Latinoamericano en Manos de los Macorinos, Vol. 1, was a commercial and critical hit, and received a Latin Grammy nomination for Album of the Year. It only made sense for Lafourcade to bring her Musas tour to the Tiny Desk. The performances are an ode to a magical time in Mexican popular music, one that is revived with every note this singer and her band perform.
One important historical note: The two older gentlemen on the video are Juan Carlos Allende and Miguel Peña, two revered musicians who played with the iconic ranchera singer Chavela Vargas.

"Tú Sí Sabes Quererme"

I’m from Mexico and now living in the US. I shared this video to my dad a few years ago and he told me “Son I’ve never heard Natalia before, she’s awesome, she feels like rising our Mexican songs again as a few decades ago”. My dad passed away last January and next week I’ll be traveling to Mexico to put his cremation in the Pacific Ocean off Mexico (Ensenada, Mexico was his hometown). I’m planning to play “Soledad y el Mar” to say last good bye to my dad. I miss you every day. I love you.

" you really know how to love me" (tu si sabes quererme ). And it goes like : It has pased so much time Finally I disvoverd your kisses I was tangled by your gaze You embrace me with all my defects You know how to love me , you know how to adore me Please don't go , stay with me for ever , to love you for ever. Heart, you really know how to love me I'm the flower that brings the hit to the garden of your live. Heart, you know how to love me, please don't go, I'm brave to correapond your love. It has pased so much time Finally I'm ready It's difficult to find love I'm here with my opend wounds. I don't care what the others thinks I stay here to be witness of the life Here for ever , for ever love us .

The songs of Natalia Lafourcade make me feel and imagine the typical Mexican cultures through her videos, such as 'Mi país Veracruzana', 'Mi religión', 'Tú me acostumbraste', and so on. In those videos, I imagine and think about traditional Mexican dresses, the Day of Independence, beautiful tourist places like Guanajuato, colorful Mexican food, and traditional dances. They transport me to a positive aspect of Mexican culture. From the perspective of an immigrant from Korea

In the song of the waves I found a blush of light For a song of seagulls I knew you were there Describing lately everything that happened An omnipresent greeting right from the sweet goodbye I'm going to navigate in your blue port I would like to know where you come from Le'ts make the time pass by See our memories in the seas And this loneliness so deep That in the song of the waves I would like to submerge Embarrassing in its aroma something new I discovered I'm going to navigate in your blue port I would like to know where you come from Let's make the time pass by See our memories in the seas And this loneliness so deep Let me sing the sea A bolero of loneliness Let me sing the sea I walk alone with loneliness Let me sing the sea A bolero of loneliness Let me sing the sea I walk alone with loneliness Loneliness and the sea

Here goes the lyrics in english for those that want to know what the second song "Mi Tierra Veracruzana" (4:00) says: In my land Veracruz I just want to drink coffee a little bit of sugar and cane to make me move my feet. Of the banna plant of it's green and brown skin i'm very deeply in love I just want to see you again See you again See you again My beloved land Veracruz, I want to see you See you again See you again My land Veracruz, I want to love you In my Veracruz land I just want to hug the sea See the night from my hamaca In the mornings only sing In the fields bury my feet In the sand only dance In a boat give away my dreams and my house will be just to laze around See you again See you again My beloved land Veracruz, I want to see you See you again See you again My land Veracruz, I want to love you There is no passing day that I don't think about you This distance makes me miss you There is no passing day that I don't think about you I paint melodies with your landscapes with your lanscapes lemon green A guayaba rose that I use for love A red yellow pitaya, the flower Blue of your golf and passion red See you again See you again I want to love you (Coffee with bread Coffee with bread Coffee with bread) In my Veracruz land I just want to drink coffee a little bit of sugar and cane to make me move my feet. Of the banna plant of it's green and brown skin i'm very deeply in love I just want to see you again See you again See you again My beloved land Veracruz, I want to see you See you again See you again My land Veracruz, I want to love you See you again See you again My beloved land Veracruz, I want to see you See you again See you again My land Veracruz, I want to love you I did the translation so you could enjoy the beautiful lyrics and the nostalgic feelings that come from being away from your homeland in the hope this makes you feel closer.

I discovered this video recently, late-night on a Friday. I posted to FB about it- how much I instantly fell in love with her, the band, the music, the spirit of it all. The next morning my aunt commented, informing me that she was in concert, locally, the following night!! Launched into action, got great seats online, and by Sunday eve (July 15th, 2019) was watching Natalia LIVE at Mountain Winery in Saratoga, California. The last time I was moved so deeply by an artist was Glen Hansard in Once (2007)... and before that, Radiohead-The Bends (1995). Ms. Lafourcade has made this hombre very happy 😊
