I’ve lived in Indonesia for about a year or so. There wasn’t a day on which I wouldn’t put my headphones on, hop on my motorbike and just roam towards nowhere listening to Kurt. The scenic route together with Kurt’s voice and lyricism painted some of the most vivid memories I’m happy to have.

This is a very important aspect that is very much overlooked. Starting musicians, especially kids, think that mistakes should be avoided - you need to stick to the sheet. The more you start discovering yourself as an artist, you realise that mistakes are beautiful... they take you to places you never thought existed. Mistakes must be embraced, they must be welcomed, forgiven, and accepted. I know there is a video of Yo yo ma (cellist) somewhere on youtube where he welcomes, acknowledges the first mistake he makes in a concert - and then continues playing. That's great philosophy for life right there!

When songs from their collaborative album first started playing on the radio, I turned on my car and heard Kurt singing. My first thought was, "Holy cow! A male Courtney Barnett!" and then she started singing.... I thought it could not make more sense for them to do a duet/collaboration; it's like they were made for each other.

I have the impression this is what two musically talented kids growing up on a desert island would produce on their own music without the influence of classical/traditional musical training: chords, harmonies, rhythm patterns, you name it. As with so many Tiny Desk vids, this made me a fan of an act who's studio work I never would have been drawn to. Other live recordings of this set have reverb on the vocals and these beautiful voices are dimmed amid the noise if the band. This is so perfect, and I adore this work and these artists so much. So very happy to have found this one.
