Once saw him in St David's Hall in Cardiff. Sadly there were only about 20 of us in the audience. He got everyone to take seats close to the stage and proceeded to give a wonderful intimate concert with requests included. Wonderful guy and have huge respect for him.

What I love about Lyle Lovett is the fact that when he is in public, he is always well dressed, HIGHLY mannered and never acts like he is better than anyone else. TRULY humble and appreciative. Can't be a better gentleman than that!

So quite awhile ago I asked my wife what she wanted for her Bday. She said Lyle Lovett tickets. I thought "well this is going to suck" but that's what the lady wanted, he just wasn't my kind of music. To this day that was one of the best concert I have ever been to. From start to end it was totally awesome!

Timber, you have a wife with excellent taste for music. I've traveled all over the country to see Lyle and his Large Band. 10+ instruments to make up the large band, and of course you realize his wit, and hopefully danced wildly when they played "Church". I had the opportunity to see him at Carnegie Hall, with the Harlem Gospel Choir.

I had the same thing happen to me with an Eric Clapton concert in the late '80s....( won the tickets in a promotion and took my then-wife. Both of us not expecting much and, man, we're we wrong) However, as time has passed and age has refused to relent, I find Eric Clapton beginning to wane and Lyle Lovett beginning to wax in my personal listening preference

My husband took me to see Lyle play at Bass Hall in FTW TX on my birthday about 15 years ago. I thoroughly enjoyed the show but was a bit distracted because I kept waiting for Lyle to wish me a Happy Birthday from the stage! Because that's something my husband would have done, just not that time. 😏 I still considered myself a very fortunate wife and Lyle Lovett fan that night. I come back to this concert often to watch Lyle be Lyle. And that fiddle player....wow.

There is a great moment in the video when Lyle recognizes Luke's pure control over his craft. He does it with a subtle little smile as if to say "damn this kid can play!" during an impressive section of Luke's solo (11:00). Two musicians that embody what it means to be artists!

First time I met Lyle, I had no idea who he was. I bought a pedal steel guitar from his band‘s pedal steel player. The second time I met him after a concert he gave at a tent festival in Germany. It started to rain in the middle of a ballad. The rain on the tent was louder than the music. Lyle stopped in the middle of the song and cracked a joke. Then he asked his audience if it was OK to turn up the volume a little bit. That was when I realized that his music wasn‘t as loud as with most other bands at the festival - and that it was so much more enjoyable, as you could actually appreciate the nuances and the quality of the music. When I talked to him after the show, he was worried about the rain incident and the audience not getting everything they came for. Wow. What an artist and true entertainer and nice person at that.

@@@ronmercer7853-Have you been to a Lyle Lovett concert? Lyle talks a lot and tells stories between songs and always makes a connection with his audience. I've seen him 6 times now and twice with John Hiatt. Great story telling in song and between sets. What cracks me up? Lyles dry witty sense of humor and his graciousness. It's a lost art of talking to an audience and drawing them in and making them feel like they are in their living room.

Can't believe its been nearly 3 decades but back in 1987 I would pick up Rolling Stone magazine to find out what concerts were coming to Chicago every month ( I was usually looking for U2, REM or Simple Minds)... I would see listings for Lyle Lovett & Leo Kottke on tour thinking "who are these guys they keep promoting, never heard of them before... weird"... local alternative station WXRT would play early Lovett songs and I was hooked... Lovett seemed so alternative to not only late 80s country, but late 80s ANYTHING. Lyle was a clearly masterful songwriter & artist with his big band and storytelling humorist sensibility. In 1989 friends were going to see Rickie Lee Jones but I hadn't really been a fan... when my friends asked me to join them I turned the ticket down... after weeks of asking me to join them my friend finally said "your guy Lyle Lovett is opening for Rickie"... well, that was all it took, a chance to see this brilliant new country folk jazz artist! But I then learned how beautiful and brilliant Rickie Lee Jones was and became a big fan of her as well... still seems like just the other day.

Met Lyle last year at MagFest in Florida, got to hang with him for a little, heard of him from my uncle growing up here and there, one of the sweetest guys I've ever met, I'm only 22, but he didn't think I knew he was, down to earth, and just an awesome guy. Total sweetheart!

Lyle’s voice is a gorgeous instrument to me. I love his music. I got to see him again at the Alberta Bair in Billings,MT with John Hiatt- another favorite of mine. I so love beautiful unique music. I absolutely love Tiny Desk - such a true pleasure. Thank you!

What a pleasure to listen to, as always! I love seeing Lyle live, listening to his music in the car, at home - whenever, wherever. If you aren't already a fan, all you have to do is to listen to him! ;-) He captivates you with his story telling and his jokes but most of all with that amazing (and often times sh**-eat'in) grin he ALWAYS seems to have on his face - just darling! My most favorite artist of all time!

Lyle Lovett is an under-appreciated genius. I like his style, sense of humor & musicality. His fiddle player complements his singing perfectly.

I grew up in the same community that Lyle Lovett grew up in, only a few years later. I have always liked him and admired his voice, clever lyrics and unusual melodies.

The melody of "If You Were To Wake Up" was composed by a preacher named William B. Stevens and was recorded in 1937 under the title "Farther Along" and has been recorded by dozens of other artists (including Trio -- Dolly Parton, Linda Ronstadt, Emmylou Harris -- in 1987).

@@sjohnschafer Who insinuated that you insinuated anything? Why reply to my 100% factual comment with obfuscation and defensiveness? As I wrote earlier, Lovett wrote the lyrics (even though you just insinuated that he didn't).

Thank you NPR for the Tiny Desk Series, and this inspiring edition. Love that Mr. Lovett made his own arrangements to appear - odd as a concert in an office is / was - and you shared that story with us. Here's to some version of Tiny Desk Concerts in 2022.

His work with Lyle can be seen on Lyle's website and on Michael's as well. Cheers from a fellow photographer and admirer of both Lyle and Michael...

He's so delightfully silly; when I saw him in Portland, Maine in 2004, he moved his guitar so the spotlight would reflect back in the eyes of people in the front rows, at least twice.
