I went to high school with Paul, and was always overawed with his piano playing and his amazing dedication to musical excellence. He was already employed as the organist of a very large Catholic church in our town by age 15. It is still a great pleasure to hear him play!

I am a martial artist, not a student of music, but this man's obvious dedication and discipline speak to me like the most respected of colleagues. Impressive and humbling: I can only imagine the hours of practice and self-imposed detriment necessary to achieve such seemingly effortless ability. Thank you for the inspiration!

Paul is a great organist and even though this is an electronic instrument, it has wonderful, clear voicing and tone. The video showing hands and feet is wonderful as well. A delight all around. Thank you for posting this.

Love the way he plays from memory too. I can learn pieces and commit them to memory at the same time and they stick. On the other hand my sight reading is deplorable.

There is a tendency that people who sightread well struggle to memorize music while people who memorize well struggle with sightreading. In my own experience, the process of sightreading does not lend itself to memorization and the process of memorization doesn't really help with sightreading.

Had the good luck a few years ago to hear him play the concerto by Stephen Paulus, with the Cleveland Orchestra, followed by a Bach encore. A wonderful evening of music, and I've followed Mr. Jacobs' work ever since. I need to look into his recordings.

@@karlrovey Well, Bach himself did write "S.D.G" on all of his works, meaning "Soli Deo Gloria/Glory to God alone", signifying that the work was produced for the sake of praising God.

Lot of people are snooty about electronics but they make proper viable home practice a reality. Looks like this is a small Allan organ. They make good stuff :)
@ryangiraldi57226 жыл бұрын
mattbod At first I was disgusted by the sounds produced by the Allen, but the dry acoustic really benefits some of the heavier counterpoint later on, don’t get wrong Allen makes nice consoles, but for $17,000, you’d expect a bit more out of the sound. I guess it served it’s purpose.
@karlrovey5 жыл бұрын
I play a similar Allen regularly. In this recording, I already know it has some stops I don't have (such as reeds on the Great). My main complaint is that I don't have strong enough reeds on the swell to solo a hymn melody on the swell over the great chorus.

@kevinfaulkner00 It's an Allen Protege, digital organ. They're actually pretty easy to move. We have one at my church and I can even lift it enough to put dollies under it. Definitely lighter than moving a piano.

I love Bach, but I would really like to see Mr. Jacobs play pieces that he created himself. He could take his talent to a whole new level by innovating the way an organ is played, much like the way Edmar Castaneda did with the Colombian Harp.

That's funny. Not a single piece played is actually church music. The Arioso is a transcription from one of Bach's Cantatas and could be classified as sacred, but everything else is simply secular concert music.
