How do you love rap when rap doesn’t love you back? From Rico Nasty’s harassment from toxic Carti fans, to Saucy Santana's unapologetically femme aesthetics in a queerphobic industry, to the assault case that put Megan Thee Stallion’s entire image on trial, each episode of Louder Than A Riot - the second season of our investigative hip-hop podcast - unpacks the unspoken rules of rap that hold the entire culture back. I'm closer to 70, and haven't found someone I liked this much in a few years. And nobody this fun in 5 years. This is someone who spent his pre-pandemic life becoming the middle-aged and then old guy at the back of a club hearing live music and looking for new sounds. The singer's voice reminds me of cool from every decade. Lou Reed, the Waitresses, Kim Deal. The silliness takes me back to seeing the B-52's or Go-Go's in the early 80's, or to Pixies songs. When rock is mostly dead and something this fun comes along, I'm interested. I found them on TikTok, where they get mocked and trolled by the young, and I don't understand why. I just heard them today and am sad to find they played a few miles away week before last. I'd have made this group my first "I'm fed up with the pandemic and going back out" concert.

Yes that's her paternal grandmother's maiden name you both have a famous ancestor don't you? Very interesting.

They actually pull it off. There's been a few acts in the last decade trying to capture something similar and all have failed and sound just like fluff. This is actually really good quality. Like a non-dissonant Sonic Youth with the slightest modernity mixed in.

Jeez louiz I love this band. So glad to be able to catch them at the beginning and get the chance to follow along as they progress. Too often I’m late to the party. Simple, catchy hooks all over the place. Really like the lyrical content as well. For all those who wanna get on here to trash it: maybe if you’d quit taking yourself so seriously, you’d be able to enjoy more in life!❤️❤️

The video for "Wet Dream" appeared randomly on my KZbin feed and I've been hooked ever since. They are such a breath of fresh air! Like Bob Boilen, this band brought me joy at just the right time. The deadpan delivery and the 'Midsommar" aesthetic of the videos made me think they were Scandinavian at first. Uff da!

Same here. That algorithm did wonders for them and I'm really thankful as well.

Discovered Wet Leg on a virtual corporate conference where Wet Leg composed the music for the wait room, and interludes. Looked them up and found they were on Tiny Desk! Great music, I'm getting Karen O vibes from the lead singer's voice.

Sound and look like a time traveling 70's rock band. Love it!

That's really interesting! To me (British, teenager in the 90s) they sound really American to me. I can't put a finger on what exactly it is, but something about their sound is something that I associate with specifically US guitar acts like Beck or the Dandy Warhols. I was surprised to find out that they're British!

@@zak3744 as an American teenager in the 90's, I concur. Reminds me of Veruca Salt, or The Breeders, or Pixies. Great band and music I sorely miss.

@@zak3744 that’s a good point I think the monotone talk/sing vocals mixed with fuzzy guitars give me beck vibes

@@thecappy Exactly, they remind me a lot of Pixies. Of course they’ve got their own flavor as well, and none of the screams. What an awesome new band.

I'm 69 yo & absolutely love Wet Leg. I think I've been a fan from their beginning. They bring a unique style & energy w/ lyrics you can sing, dance or whatever to! A new wave mix of the Stones & Joy Division that happily pumps the heart w/ a sound all their own!

so effin good - reminds me of the fun days of the Undertones (showing my age ) - why has music got so corporate and serious . This band deserves all the success that comes their way - such a delight .

Their music makes me so everything, you know? I can't even understand it..... Just flawless music. The ey have got the balance right, the drummer is super awesome, he's got that Topper Headon kind of magic in his playing, the chemistry between these musicians is in the music..and those lyrics! I I feel relieved every time I play the album....

Love this. Heard it on Radio X the other day and had to Shazam it. Brings back a feeling of Brit Pop Elastica with a nice dash of Verruca Salt.
