it depends on the horse and what discipline they are doing, any horse can have fun with any discipline. reining does hold a special place for me, i am absolutely crazy about it and imo, it is one of the best horse sports!

@16handsoffunfunfun I've been researching reining, and watching a lot of it, and now I understand that it's a gorgeous western sport. That was a year ago, I thought the whole point was just spinning in circles. I'm actually involved in reining now, so... yeah.

I your point thats the same thing when i first saw and hurd of reining. Horses cant get dizzy from spining because of the thier eyes are. They cant focus thier eyes on things like we can cause thier eyes are on the side of thier head. And on the sliding, they have shoes on. The ones in the back are a little longe then then ones on the front so they cover the hoof (fooot) and then stick out just a little ways in the back. most riders also put boots on thier horses.

my horse epic fails at the slow circles lol once we were doing a reining pattern where you run down the center and stop, but she thought it was time for barrels and decided to full out gallop down and then not stop..lol Andrea Fapanni is probably one of my favorite reining trainers:)

@AgnethaPatrull Low head set shows they are relaxed and doing their jobs, also how they are trained to hold their heads. And when a horses ears are half back that means they are listening or focusing on their rider.

Accually the reining is very good for the horses brain; and many like it, mine does! Doing circles, spins, etc. at fast & slow lope/canter paces, makes it interesting for them, and they really have to think.

@GreenBayBreyerFarm Because if a horse can do that, then you can be positive that horse is light enough on its feet to help you chase down and keep with with the quick direction changes of a run away steer.

@BabyBirdWispers have you seen how they are trained to do a slide stop...its all using there natural movment...like when there out in the feild and run out of fence. i have i do reining and my horse will spin and slide stop on his own outside, these horses lov the sport just as much as we do

@GreenBayBreyerFarm I use to think like that too. My old trainer would always say stuff like "Stacey Westfall is not that great" and "It take 6 weeks to teach a reining horse to spin in a circle compared to a dressage horse which takes roughly 6 years to teach them how to prance and spin because it requires more muscles.....babababbabaabaababab." Long story short, I don't ride at her barn anymore. She was not even a western rider so I don't know where she got that kind of information from.

@GreenBayBreyerFarm ...the fact you can actualy teach your horse to spin in a circle shows that you have trained it to an exceptional degree, it it the proof that horses are incredibly inteligent animals which can be trained to do practicaly anything just like a dog in agility. horse raining is not just fun it trains the horse to be able to do a JOB and many of them still do! so this not always for fun or points in a show but because it is necessary on the ranch! so why not have some fun as wel

@Lytshi1992 its rally fun but kinda scary. The run downs and stops are the most exciting/scary because if you don't sit deep and throw your legs forward at the right time you get air time.

yes they do actually...haha. my trainer was spinning my horse one time(an all around aqha horse) and she started wavering a little. but the horses do get used to it as do the riders.

xoxocherry: it depends on the horse... my horse is 6 and he was ridden as a reiner since he was like 2 and shown hard and he has amazing hocks so it depends on the horse....

actually it takes correct training. also the horse will most likely be given some kind of joint supplement like msm or adequain (just some examples). reining can be hard on any joint, not just the hocks. you are right though, horses that arent conditioned and/or trained properly can have joint issues, but horses of this calubur most likely dont, or it is very well maintained.

okay...i both rein and jump, along with a couple of my friends...and we are not just back yard riders, we show a lot, and at events like the canadian reining breeders classic, spruce meadows, and are going to compete in oklahoma at the NRHA futurity...both sports take a lot of time and effort to make it to the top, and the two are not that differnt when you think about it...

Yee ha! I ride dressage but this looks so fun! It's great to race around the arena, sadly my horse trips over his own legs if he gallops too hard! lol But I think horse riding isn't natural at all, but it's ok if the horse is having a good time =D

@Lytshi1992 Western is really fun. Espicaly pleasure an dloping really fast on a flat stretch. To me the wstern saddle is alot more comfortable and i feel alot more safer in the western saddle. I really hope that you can try western someday! One tip, if you are riding a horse that is alerady on a westen horse, hold the reins looser then you would then riding english.
