Another loss to the storm and our inability to beat the storm and panthers in regular season games continues. We botched a lot of opportunities tonight and were clumsy with the play of the ball. Too many sin bins and errors cost this team tonight. Credit where it’s due to the storm they are definitely the only team who will challenge Penrith this year. They have exceptional talent across the board and will only improve once Munster returns. Bring on finals footy.

That was easily the best 80 minutes that the Storm have played all year, against one of the teams that all of the "experts" have already got in their grand final.....and this is the team on top of the table. @@ItsAleqo They haven't played better for a full game this year....definitely in patches, but that's not the same as having their best game. Regardless of sin bins (which the Storm also had) or anything else, they were playing against a very strong team - I wouldn't expect either one to be "wiped off the park", and they only conceded 8 points against a team that was averaging over 32 points per game up to this point. As for the Tigers game, it doesn't really hold much relevance to my original comment (apart from adding weight to what I said), and I imagine that you didn't watch it - the Tigers just about had their best game of the season, and absolutely aimed up against the Storm, which is what most teams tend to do.

*The Refs are pathetic. Can’t stand this game anymore. Watched every game since 1987.* Barely bothered to watch origin anymore. The penalties are ridiculous and I don’t even like these teams. The player jumped in the air spontaneously as a tackle was being made. No penalty. The player changed levels and fell into the shoulder. Should be no penalty. Sick of this bs

To be fair, for the most part the refs had a pretty good game - especially the first half. I agree with your examples, but they were two of maybe three or four suspect calls all game. Usually there would be a dozen or more rubbish decisions every game....to the point where the players have less input to the flow and result of a game than the refs. That tackled in mid air penalty was definitely atrocious though....it came from Ashley Klein in the bunker. Everyone may as well jump just before they get tackled from now on.

@@loxxovvoxxol2896 The justification for the penalty behind that tackle is not so much the intent but the result. Whether Storm intended it or not, Sualii was thrown into a shocking landing.

It has basically always been that way, judiciary punishments are determined by injury caused though that doesn't mean it's a reasonable form of decision making. In this case the penalty occurred after Sualii landed dangerously - only because he leapt into the air to catch the ball after he failed to do so in his first attempt....by that time the defence was right there ready to make a tackle - they can't get out of the way, nor should they. It's unfortunate that he landed awkwardly and I'm glad that he wasn't seriously injured....but that should never be a penalty. I mean, what rule did the defender break? Tackling a player in mid-air? The player leapt over the defender after making a meal of the pass, because he was more worried about his next move rather than securely catching the ball. Or was it putting a player in a dangerous position? The player literally put himself in that position, It's not comparable to catching a bomb and being taking out during a kick chase, and it's not because the defender lifted him in the tackle. It's just not a penalty.

If we penalised on intent, it’d be extremely open to interpretation and players would be getting questionable relief and penalisation every other moment of the game. The penalty is received because a player was thrown into an extremely dangerous situation (and clearly in pursuit of the ball rather than attempting to jump over the defence and causing it through his own negligence), whether intentional or not is not the case. Many unintentional dangerous interactions occur week in week out and all (that are caught by ref) are penalised.

@@TransientNeurotic No, it was the attacking player that threw themselves into a dangerous position. Every week a ball bounces out of a players hands, yet they don't try to leapfrog the defence in order to regain possession - the defender had every right to be there to make a tackle, and would never have imagined that Sualii was going to make the decision to jump over him. This isn't about having intent or not - simply put, the defender didn't cause the outcome. Sualii was in pursuit of the ball, but there was no way known that anybody could foresee those events unfolding the way that they did. The defender was up and ready to make a tackle, the ball popped into the air (due to the ball carriers "negligence") and had Sualii not left the ground, Meaney would have tackled him as he was juggling the ball....then all we would have heard about that play is how wonderful the defence was by Meaney to have forced an error out of Sualii - instead he jumped up, hit the ground hard, and was awarded a penalty. As for any type of ruling being "extremely open to interpretation", do we watch the same sport? They can't even manage to be consistent with the decisions that they make within an 80 minute game.....or in the same half, what was deemed a penalty five minutes ago isn't one now - it's a weekly occurrence.
