McDowell county. My mother was born and raised there. My uncles and grandpa were coal miners. I remember the old N&W trains rolling through English on this line, day and night, when I was a young boy. My grandparents house was right beside the tracks. I’d wake up and run to the window to watch them. It’s a shame what has happened to the coal industry over the years. Thanks for the video!!

Pretty cool video. I drove a coal truck for years throughout McDowell County, hauling from jobs in Big Creek, Gary and several others to river loading facilities just South of Kenova. Anyway I remember well seeing NS pusher crews waiting at Iaeger yard to help eastbound/southbound trains over the mountain. I quit hauling coal in 2001 as the writing was already on the wall - they were going to kill coal and do away with the Billion Dollar Coalfield. Living in Huntington, I drive by the CSX locomotive shop almost daily. Behind that shop there’s nearly a mile long line of locos parked along the main waiting to be scrapped. Thirty years ago if someone had tried to tell me the USA would kill coal mining I’d have called them a liar - how wrong I was.

The Dry Fork Branch is still active. I believe trains are loading at Caretta and Jacobs Fork, and the occasional train to Birmingham, AL uses it. NS is trying to remove the signals over there though, but the application hasn't been approved or denied yet.

But, the FRA approved NS’s application on the Virginian P-D District, but added a lot of stipulations for broken rail protection, slide fences, and switch position indication, so it will be interesting to see what happens on the Dry Fork. The FRA doesn’t seem to be playing around.
