You NEVER see Long hood forward anymore! Thanks for this cool footage! The only 2 times I can recall LHF are 12/23/05 in Wabash, IN with an NS C40-8W and June 2009 in Tipton, IN.

This brings back so many memories of chasing trains with my grandfather. As a young railfan in 1988 at 6 years old, I couldn't distinguish an EMD from a GE unit or let alone all the models, but even at 6 I'd notice the trains on Norfolk Southern going through my town with the diesel locomotives in that configuration and found them neat as hell and often had the Geep on my first life like train set pulling that way.

Wonder why BNSF does that. These N&W early NS units where built for long hood forward opperation. Bet the crews just loved looking down that long hood. Thanks for watching..
@1jackdk15 жыл бұрын
The Southern & N&W did that for safety reasons. They figured there was more metal to go threw before it gets to the crew in case of a wreck. Thanks for looking. Jack

Awesome footage. The C39-8s were my favorite of all GE locos (even though I never saw any personally). They just seemed to have so much character! 5 stars!

The main reason was if there was an accident, the long hood would protect the crew more. It must have been hard to see down the side of that long hood. Thanks for watching. Jackmp294

I got to agreewith you. The C39's and C32's where also my favorite GE body style. Maybe because they look like an ALCO, and I'm a really BIG ALCO fan. Thanks for watching. Jack

LHF may be nice for the railfans, but its not as nice for the traincew. Sight issues etc, there is a reason they went to the short hoods. Not trying to start a railfan snowball fight.......
@brakie448207 жыл бұрын
LHF was never a issue with two men in the cab the fella in the fireman's seat (diesels had firemen at one time) would watch the left side while the engineer watched the right side. On the same subject both N&W and Southern ran their engines either way as photos will prove. No snowball fight just the facts.
@mikeytrains16 жыл бұрын
In England they typically don't have problems like that, an example of one of their old engines that ran during the 60s/70s, the Class 52, were loved by crews because of their visibility. It's a bit off subject, but I just had to put that out that.

@1jackdk I couldn't help but overhear your comment. Well, I once got to ride a short distance in a Norfolk Southern long hood lead and it really is a wonderful view. The only trouble I remember was that the driver had to ask his conductor every now and then if he saw any railroad crossings. It really was a wonderful time.

Not sure why but running GE locomotives long hood forward makes them look like hammerhead sharks in a way.
@ljones12113 жыл бұрын
@1jackdk it was safety and it also harkened back to the days of steam, when the cab was at the back of the locomotive, and well N&W and Southern were well very traditional RR's and that's also a reason, or so i've heard.

I've operated E44 long hood forward, GG1s, RS11s. It's all a pain. NW engines had 2 control stands so the engineer was on the right side no matter shore or long leading. SR had one control stand, and it was along side the engineer. You used your left hand for the controls, or your right hand depending what engine you had.

2:01 did they combine two trains? Nice catch of a rare procedure! Today, that operation is limited to branch lines!

Nice catches. What horn was on that NS Dash 8 in the 2nd clip?
@ejdsndnj8 ай бұрын
Idk the horn but the locomotive was a C39-8
@csxtrainfan3197 ай бұрын
I believe it was a K5H, because I’ve been reading questions from horn experts and NS 8570 and 8595 had a K5H sounding horn on railfanning the application region volume 3
@est86leo13 жыл бұрын
@1jackdk I know why! The crews just don't want to wye or turn the engine to face the right way; extra work kills... If its for industry, long or short, it don't matter, but transfers, we try to keep two back to back at all times.

I love how the c39-8s had short hoods but NS ordered the controls backwards, NS was so ignorant back then, I can imagine the order for them at Erie and they already have a surplus amount built and the executives looking at it like "oh great another order for NS" just turn the controls around they probably wouldn't be able to tell the difference anyways we aren't building high short hoods anymore"
@1jackdk7 жыл бұрын
Not to mention, N&W and then NS didn't order toilets either, in their locomotives. The crews got a plastic bag in their crew packs...
