Tuesday, June 15, 2021 - Muncie & Cowan, IN -
This all took place in a 3 hour period. Just after I arrived at my usual spot, the grade crossing at CR400S on the Norfolk Southern's New Castle District, NS train 189 approached at 1:06 from the North on the main. It slowed in preparation for stopping at CP Ball. This train was so long, that it blocked 2 crossings (CR400 and CR500) when it stopped with its head end at Ball. So, I decided to rush down to Cowan (CR600) so that I could catch approaching northbound NS 142. When I got to Cowan at 1:34, there was a long cut of grain cars parked on the siding just south of CR600 and the head end of NS 189 was just to the north beyond the CP Ball signals and crossovers.
NS 142 arrived minutes later at 1:41 on the main, passed the grain cars and crossed over onto the siding, and passed the 189. The 142 then slowed to stop at CR400. Its tail was adjacent to the head end of 189.
Then, at 1:58, NS 189 restarted its southbound trip. I then went back to CR400S where NS 142 was stopped. It restarted its northbound trip at 2:46.
At 3:24, NS 282 approached and stopped just short of the crossing to await the approaching southbound NS 143 which passed at 4:03 and stopped at CP Ball with its tail end adjacent to the head end of the 282. NS 282 restarted and resumed its northbound trip at 4:09. Then, I had to head home. Not bad for only 3 hours trackside!
NS 189. Detroit to Chattanooga
NS 142. Irondale, AL - Elkhart, IN
NS 282. Jacksonville to Chicago
NS 143. Elkhart to Chattanooga
Enjoy and thanks for watching!
