The problem is, we remember the "weather balloons" that accidentally drifted over critical ground installations, and we remember the ridiculous explanations they fed us. That was simply not an honest response to the American people. The federal government, particularly the military, has more than enough ability to send up long-range drones with infrared cameras to get close-up imagery of these things, so I have to assume that they already know what they are. But I've seen the video, and they aren't manned fixed-wing (airplanes). Once you know that someone is lying to you, you worry more about the reason why they're lying.

Either the drones are breaking the law aka regulations for UAVs or they have authorization by the FAA to conduct nighttime operations over 400 feet in restricted air space. So if they have proper authorization then why don’t they just tell reporters and Congress the drones are legal or admit the drones/ drone pilots are breaking the laws and will be held accountable up to having the drones taken into custody.

Almost all of the video I've seen have pretty clearly been ordinary manned aircraft, just as he says. It is very easy to mis-estimate distance in the sky at night and it may well be that none of them were actually in restricted airspace even though untrained observers on the ground thought they were. Stuff like this tends to be self-multiplying. You have a few reports and then people who have never spent any time looking at the sky to identify lights are doing so and some fraction of them see things that they think are unusual but really have ordinary explanations.
