My last confession was one I'll remember for a while. I just moved an hour and a half away - it was at a small, beautiful church in between my old and new town and had been a while since I confessed previously. I laid everything out for probably 10 straight minutes, and the priest didn't offer advice. Just recognized, noticed, vocalized his observation. It was the first time in a long time where I remembered Christ is truly present in the Sacrament, and I felt seen by Him. I left the confessional and prayed my penance silently, and then some more. I then began to cry silently, reflecting both on my own foolish alienation of myself from God, but even more than that, over time, the beauty and awe of the mercy of God. My tears littered the pew in front of me. I'm getting emotional thinking of it again. The sacrament is necessary for salvation. It really is that simple.

As the Father has sent me, I am sending you.” 22 And with that he breathed on them and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit. 23 If you forgive anyone’s sins, their sins are forgiven; if you do not forgive them, they are not forgiven.” So the Apostles and their successors can forgive your sins or retain them (meaning not forgive them). This means you must receive absolution from a priest to ordinarily forgive your sins. Failure to do this is to be disobedient to God. the practice of confession to a priest existed in the early Christian Church before the Great Schism of 1054. Both the Eastern Orthodox and Roman Catholic Churches inherited this practice from the early Christian community. In the earliest days of the Church, public confession was common, where sins were confessed openly before the congregation, and the bishop or priest would pronounce absolution. Over time, private confession to a priest became more common, especially by the 5th century, as the Church developed more formal sacramental practices. This was part of the Church’s understanding of repentance and forgiveness, based on biblical passages such as John 20:22-23, where Christ gave the apostles the authority to forgive sins. Both the Orthodox and Catholic traditions continue the practice of confession, though there are differences in how the sacrament is performed today. The essential concept of confession to a priest, however, was well established before the schism.

"If you are not Catholic, you can make a perfect act of contrition" Then goes on to say "when making a perfect act of Contrition, you must promise to go to confession at your earliest opportunity" There is no remission of sin outside the Catholic Church. The Vatican II sect doesn't believe that you must go to a priest in communion with the Pope for confession, as Unitatis Redintegratio #3 states that those, especially with valid orders, whom are separated from the Pontiff, that the Holy Spirit has not refrained from using these other Christian communities as a means of salvation.

I didn’t say that. Instead I said the opposite. However, Christ instituted the sacrament of confession and commands people to confess their sins to a priest. This is seen in John 20:21-23 which says: 21 Again Jesus said, “Peace be with you! This is why all Christians prior to the reformation engaged in the sacrament of Confession.

You really are lost. Jesus said, "I am the way and the truth and the life. No man cometh unto the Father (God), but by me" He also said, "say unto NO man, "father, father", for there is but ONE Father; our Father, in Heaven. Confession of your sins to ANYONE, other than Jesus Christ, will do absolutely NOTHING to absolve you OF that sin. May you find Jesus, confess all your sin to him and TRULY worship him. Good luck.

@@NickNui If you cannot remember every single little sin that’s alright, we are only human after all and God knows that, when you got to confession you should tell the priest the sins you CAN remember, everyone agrees you shouldn’t list off every single sin, that would be way too long, that’s why there are categories of sins you can put them in too. Instead of saying something like “I said Jesus Christ probably looked dumbed.” Just say you blasphemed the Lord, but there are certain sins you should be more in detail about, like masturbation, you shouldn’t say “I lusted last night” that’s way to vague, instead say something simple like “I masturbated to [insert type of pornography here].” This will let the priest understand it better, what I would say if you cannot remember your past sins at all just say something like “I know I have lusted, I have committed wrath, envy, sloth, blasphemy, etc etc.” Also I wanted to say that people who know confession is true can and are sure of their salvation, Christ gives the priest the authority to forgive sins and when he says the words of absolution you can have full confidence that yes, you are forgiven by God.

God gives you the grace to remember the things you should mention. If I went to confession 2 weeks ago and sadly turned my back on God by committing a mortal sin of looking at some beautiful girl and thinking lustful thoughts, or got angry and told my father I hate him, I know perfectly I just committed a major sin and won’t forget to mention it when I go to confession as soon as possible. I don’t have to mention that my prayers were slightly imperfect or that I’m sure I said something nasty to my teacher when I was 10. If I remember those things, know I have not confessed them, and they have bubbled up in my memory, sure. If you’ve never been to confession or it’s been years, just go. Don’t let the excuse that your human intellect may not remember it all hold you back from God’s mercy.

@@LukeFerguson0 “If we confess our sins, He (God) is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness” (1 John 1:9). the Catechism of the Catholic Church says that “only God forgives sins. Since he is the Son of God, Jesus says of himself, ‘The Son of man has authority on earth to forgive sins’ and exercises this divine power: ‘Your sins are forgiven’” (1441). “by virtue of [Christ’s] divine authority he gives this power to men to exercise in his name.” “‘Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you.’ And when he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, ‘Receive the holy Spirit. Whose sins you forgive are forgiven them, and whose sins you retain are retained.’” (John 20:20-23) as you know all Catholic priests have apostolic succession coming all the way from Peter and the early Christians and Apostles, so the priests can forgive sins, this was also practiced by the early Christians. "Do not neglect the spiritual gift within you, which was bestowed on you through prophetic utterance with the laying on of hands by the presbyterate." (1 Tim 4:14) presbyter means elder, or ordained minister, there is more biblical proof that we should confess our sins to a Presbyter, “Is anyone among you sick? He should summon the presbyters of the church and they should pray over him and anoint him with oil in the name of the Lord" (James 5:14) "And the prayer of faith will save the sick person and the Lord will raise him up. If he has committed any sins, he will be forgiven." (James 5:15) "Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed.” (James 5:16) As you should know the priest is persona Christi, Latin for “in the person of Christ” Jesus Christ Himself is absolving you through the words and actions of the priest, so you can have absolute confidence in your forgiveness. God wants us to know absolutely that our sins are forgiven by someone saying it verbally for us to hear with the full authority of Christ. Here’s some parts from the Didache from the early Christian’s around 500-600 A.D. "Confess your sins in church, and do not go up to your prayer with an evil conscience. This is the way of life." (ch 4) "But every Lord's day gather yourselves together, and break bread, and give thanksgiving after having confessed your transgressions, that your sacrifice may be pure." (ch 14) These are just very basic examples for there are much much more that I don’t have time to address, I would say go watch real great Catholic apologists like Trent Horn and Sam (though Sam is more for refuting Islam.) also it’s a really good idea to always read into the early church fathers, the early Christians, and the great saints and theologians of the early Catholic Church too see what they thought and knew.
