NSMBW but there's unforgiving fall damage (World 2) | New Super Mario Bros. Wii

To get the mod (It's kind of just a cheat code) go to the comment section on this video: • I added fall damage to... and check the pinned comment.
Additionally, you can get the Movement During Cutscenes (So that the game is possible in some cutscenes) mod and Player 1 can select character mod.

I forgot to save so I had to redo it. When I enter World 3 I will instead have 2 lives and some mushrooms.

How does the mod work? Can you twirl before you fall to negate damage?

You can only fall slower by using Yoshi or a propeller suit. There is no acceleration limit, meaning you fall extremely fast. Shaking the wiimote or ground-pound canceling does nothing.
