Very clear and nicely done info on neon sign transformers...thanks!

Wow! I'm not a geek but, I "got it!" I love to learn:) Thank you:)

cool I thought they were twin coils but good idea tri coils and easy to pull out of phase. Thanks I have a fetish for high sparky toys. ( not talking perv)

To measure the voltage output of your oil burner transformer with a meter that might not be able to read up to 6kv (ish) build a capacitive voltage divider. (search google)

@filip3311 - i got mine from a sign store, they make custom signs for stores and company's, they will have a few of them around and they will sell for around 50$ i got mine for 60$ and they took them out and put in new ones, they sold me an old one

I understand how Chris would rather people grab NST's for safety and simplicity but myself, you will never catch me pulling any arcs at this low of frequency. If you mess up it can be the biggest mistake of your life, maybe your last...

Great video. I built 2 Jacob's Ladders - one at 15kv and 30ma, the other at 15/60. The 15/60 is MUCH better (as you noted that it would be) - better than just double the size of the spark - more like an exponential jump is size - like 4 times. My question: If I want to try and hook my NST's up in parallel, what gauge wire should I use? Thanks!

Cyclone Productions For simple NST's with 2 in parallel you can just use an old IEC power cable and it's fine. The load is very small.

Do you have a multimeter? If so, I would calculate the input wattage (V*I) and see if you can find the output voltage. Then use this equation : I=W/V I = Current in Ampere V = Volts W = Watts I hope I could help

What do you say at 4:22 ? They never rough ?

I realize this video is 8 years old, but where do you get your NSTs? I'm in the planning stages of constructing a Jacob's ladder and all I've come across are the electronic NST's that are current limited to 30mA. Nice vid, very informative.

I have an old furnace ignition transformer, but there no specifications on it, it makes about 8mm spark length. Is there a way to measure the output current, maybe using a lower voltage input or so?

What is the input and output range of the variac you are using with this 12kv NST? I am looking for a variac to use with my 12kv NST, Thanks.

variac is off, my life is good:p LOL

Can I connect it on 230V because I'm in europe?

Only when the primary voltage is 220V to 280V

@thegeekgroup What's the transformer on the far left with the two white bushings on top?
