One of my favorite sports games is still MLB Power Pros 2008, especially the Success Mode. Such a fun replay-able game mode. I still remember playing it all summer one year as a kid.

Hey NTE, you ever play the Quarterback Club games on the N64? I remember the one I had, I think it was '99, had a really interesting mode where you played historical moments in games. One of the toughest was trying to lead a Broncos comeback in that one SB they got smoked in.

How about Bad News Baseball for the NES? I would also suggest the original Baseball Stars for the NES as well. Baseball Stars from that era was well ahead of its time in some aspects as it gave you Create a Team options where you can select from several pre made logos and jerseys that were associated with the logos, you could name the team anything you like (only 16 characters) and you could name your players anything you like (only 6 characters). You could fire and hire players. As you played games and won you would earn money to sign the players to new contracts that would give you anywhere from 1-6 points randomly to power up your players any way you wished. The games controls are simple and easy to pick up. You could even climb the fence to rob home runs.

I’ve being curious about this game. For the longest time I wanted to make a new Blitz/NBA jam like game. But they seem to be against making a simple arcade sports game. They seem to want to make them too technical instead of making a simple pick and play game. That you can learn on about 5 minutes. I don’t even mind the loot boxes. But they keep trying to hard to make a cool game instead of making the game fun to play.

Yes but also no. I'm an old man, been gaming since the first NES. Games themselves - like the mechanics, the story/characters, the actual FUN you used to have (instead of 80% of gaming being a mind numbing "grind")... those are all much worse now. But regarding immersion, the real reason we all play video games, it's just much better now. Excellent graphics, professional voice acting, patch updates (sometimes) are all massive improvements to video gaming. If they ever think to bring back to old style of game design, with these new graphics engines, we'll truly enter the golden age of gaming. But, sadly, that will never happen. The best days of gaming ended with the PS3.

To be frank, creating arcade sports game as a pick up and play and nostalgia is not a satisfying demand as it once was then, now arcadey sports game is gonna need that "best of both worlds" type of concept thing to evolve and survive these days and have high replayability. alot of fun and chaotic arcade game play with simulation features of custom teams and players maybe even a season mode and a touch of RPG. will always be the heart of replay value, that and watching 2 cpu teams torment each other. Games like power pro, super mega baseball, tape to tape, robodunk, and even mutant football league realized this. Wild card football does and misses the mark. which i think is the same mistake alot of those Triple A devs and indie devs tend to make with their arcade sports games.
