I did this on a transverse mounted 2012 Impala 3.6. Thanks for the tip on the clip I would have never figured it out. To get to the PCV was a tight access. The PCV was in there pretty tight. I started by using a curved pry tool like a mini crowbar and tapped it minimally as a wedge using a hammer between the PCV and the plastic. This dislodged the PCV enough to insert a trim remover tool and with more minimal hammer tapping on the butt handle of the trim remover tool, lifted the PVC out. To reinsert, I used two socket extenders with a swivel on the part I placed over the nipple top of the PVC to tap it down into the seat.

Hey mate, I had a 07 RA Rodeo with same 3.6L engine and had same problem with the oil sludge, you need to use a full synthetic oil and change it every 7500ks or earlier, not what the book says. I used Nulon 5w30 full synthetic. If you let the oil sludge up it leads to all sorts of problems with the oil pressure and in turn the fine oil passages throughout the engine block up and then it goodbye engine because various parts are not getting enough lubrication.

Great video I got a 2011 cts I notices there was big blob of slimy oil in the air intake hose when I was changing my air filter, the oil built up in the hose directly below the pcv vacuum line connected to the top of hose just before it clamps to the intake manifold which also had this grime which was getting sucked into the intake. That pcv line was connected to that same connector on the passenger side. I was glad I caught this when the car had about 60,000miles(about 95,000km). I found the same information you layout and bought a new valve piece and drilled it out and also added a catch can. i got one that has a brass filter and is easy to drain but it came with cheap tubing lines which couldnt handle high temps and ended up kinking and blocking airflow which almost caused the the engine to stall when i was out on a drive. I went to a local hose and tubing supplier and really didnt know what class or grade I needed that could handle the pressure and temperature. The owner came out and asked me to show him and I showed him my kinking lines and explained that I needed something to handle the temps and pressure. Now this was a place that sold and supplied all kinds of hoses and tubes by the spool but the owner just pulled off one of the lines that was kinked and checked the size of the hose, then said ok how long of piece do you need. I said 10ft just so I had some extra just incase. 5 mins later he came out with a nice thick hose and hands it to me, I ask him what the cost is and he said 10 bucks which was perfect cause I only has $10 bill in my wallet. I dont know what the hose I got was made of but it hasnt kinked in years and I still have about 4 feet of it in my tool box. But ya I would say get a catch can if you do this mod. Mine gets about half full of oil every oil change and thats all oil which would be getting in your air intake

My 18 yo son bought an 06 CTS 2.8 with 80k miles a month ago--grandpa car--figured it was well cared for. Started hearing a rattle noise from the front of the engine when going up our steep driveway. Checked oil and it was not even on the stick--so that was the timing chain being starved when at an angle. I immediately changed the oil and put in 6 qts of AMSOIL. Researched these CTS's and heard about oil consumption issues. One week later (about 300 miles) and we're a quart low already. Plan to inspect the pcv (and probably valve cover design next). Unless I am not understanding your question that line is a recycle tube and it is normal to have oil in a factory air box or in yours right next to the MAF sensor. Would this contribute to clogging the catalytic converters and throwing po420&430 codes?
@Nthefastlane2 жыл бұрын
It's definitely a possibility. If the PCV system gets clogged enough it causes excessive crankcase pressure wich pushes oil past the valve stem seals and also the piston rings. When that happens, it burns oil and pushes it into the catalytic converter. Sometimes a blown head gaskets can destroy catalytic converters as well.
@chevyfan12519924 жыл бұрын
2 concerns I have with this are: Won't changing the profile of the PCV valve holes increase oil mist-contaminated air getting into the intake manifold causing valve problems earlier?? and what effect does the new drilled hole sizes have on engine vacuum? Would this mod increase carbon deposits in the engine? and possibly effect smog emissions?
@Nthefastlane5 жыл бұрын
I can't say for sure as I don't live in a smog required State. My personal opinion would be that it wouldn't affect it too much. Exhaust gases are still going to pass through the catalytic converter before the smog sniffer on the exhaust tailpipe. Maybe someone else can comment that lives in a smog testing State. They might be able to better inform you.
@Nthefastlane5 жыл бұрын
As for the carbon deposits I would say it would make things better. In a sense if your PCV system is clogged up you might not pass a smog test because of the crankcase pressure getting past the piston rings and burning oil out the exhaust. When you allow the PCV system to pull more positive pressure out of the crankcase instead of it sucking oil, it's only going to pull vapors which are easily burned off once they enter the catalytic converter. A properly working PCV system will increase MPG. This happens because the PCV system pulls fumes into the intake system and burns it just like fuel. When the ECU recognizes that it doesn't need as much fuel it will spray less fuel from the injectors causing better MPG.
@andred29365 жыл бұрын

@@Nthefastlane did this get answered? Would like to just order a new PVC valve, but are the holes larger? Also the link to the part on Amazon shows it's not compatible with 05 CTS. Is there something else?
@Nthefastlane3 жыл бұрын
I'm going to say that the holes are the same size judging by the picture that I see online. I have not ordered a new one personally, only drilled out the holes in the pre-existing OEM one.

It says that because they don't have a list of the vehicles it fits. But they are the correct PCV valves.

I did this on my 2008 SRX and it seemed to solve the oil use at first. The PCV was very clogged and dirty so I drilled it out per your video. Now it's using the oil again. Do you think I need to put on a catch can or just get rid of the SRX?
@HDHeritageSoftail Жыл бұрын
All of those engines use oil more or less. Drilling the pcv is not a good idea - I do it to mine and it get worse, more oil in catch can (because bigger holes allow to flow more oil mist in intake). Ending with new pcv. Better install a catch can and live with this "feature" of these alloytec engines

I bought a 2004 srx that the prior owner didn't use synthetic oil, first time I checked the oil, barely showed on dip stick. I have been running synthetic and it does use a quart after hundreds of miles. Goingvto drill the pvc . Thanks for the video.

You recommend a Catch can oil. Built. Is that will low the engine oil levels?

My 2009 camry le v4 is burning too much oil like emptying every 500 miles. The car is running smooth and give good mpg if i top up the oil every 300 - 500 miles. Will replacing pcv valve fix this issue ?

I have a 2015 Cadillac SRX with the 3.6L engine that burns about a quart of oil every 5k miles. Not as bad as some have reported with the older models which supposedly was fixed in '14 but still unacceptable to me. Any other ideas of what could be the culprit?
@seadoocruiser18635 жыл бұрын
Is it true that this can lead to timing chain failure if the pcv isn't freer flowing?
@bigfella66295 жыл бұрын
Yes its part of the problem. You also need to do regular oil changes and use a good full synthetic oil.
@danielsimpson89295 жыл бұрын
I'd argue that all of the hfv6 line should have catch cans. The lf4 should have a dry sump much like they've done with the c8 vetts

If you buy a replacement PVC valve does it have larger holes in it?
@Nthefastlane4 жыл бұрын
I would like to say yes, but to be truthful, I haven't seen a newely purchased retail one yet. GM did change the design with the later models during assembly.

@@Nthefastlane Thanks I'm going to purchase one tomorrow. I will post if there is a difference.

@@garymckee8857 If it's the same size holes I would just drilled the new one out. When I returned this vehicle back to my friend, the first thing he mentioned was that the vehicle felt much more responsive and it had quicker acceleration. It makes sense because the pistons and rods don't have to fight crankcase pressure. Also, lower crankcase pressure allows the piston rings to seal better causing better compression. All this means better MPG and more HP.

@@86diggler sorry I forgot to get back to you and the answer is no it's the same diameter holes as OEM.

Interesting vid...my son's '07 Buick Lacrosse has the 3.6L VVT and burns about a quart of oil every 2500 miles...I just replaced the PCV valve and made this mod, will be interesting to see if it has any effect...

Should It flow air bidirectional? I can actually see through it after cleaning it.

Does this also happen with the 3.2/2.8L cts? Does the crankcase have more or less pressure the larger/smaller the engine? Would I need to adjust the size of the hole drilled out?
